Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

School cancels ski trip due to snow

The annual 'skiing week' for pupils in the Scottish Highlands villages of Braemar, Aboyne and Ballater was cancelled yesterday, due to snow and weather.

This report from The Press and Journal [Aberdeen]

Quote:
Teachers decided against making the trip to Glenshee ski centre despite the conditions being hailed as the best of the season so far for snowsports.

Ski instructor John MacPherson said: “At this time of year ski-ing is the economy.

“We rely on kids coming up and continuing enthusiasm for the sport. It’s the kids I feel sorry for. I know we have health and safety regulations but I feel this is beyond commonsense.

“Snow conditions today are fantastic.”

Many students braved the conditions and made their own way to the ski centre despite the school closures.

Glenshee director Stewart Davidson took a diplomatic line:

Quote:
“The teachers at the end of the day have to think about the children’s safety.

“It’s great that they managed to make their own way up. It’s not every year we get decent snow coverage.”

How bad were the weather conditions up there yesterday? Anyone on the scene?

My recollection of teaching kids on Cairngorm back in the 1970s was that we bused the groups up the mountain whenever the road was open, even if they just got a taste of how wild things can be. And the combination of blizzards and white-outs can certainly get dangerous. Decision-making now seems to be more cautious, but you'd think that Highlands kids would be given outdoor training and experiences. Sad if they're not.

We were forever not getting to go skiing in Scotland in the 70s/80s because of excess snow/wind/whatnot. We used to get made to go orienteering round Lagganlia instead, dullsville. Evil or Very Mad
