Poster: A snowHead

Hi I'm going away in a few weeks, first boarding holiday.
We have bought most of the essentials except for a helmet which we'll probably hire out there.
Everyone has said impact shorts are great - I've looked at a few places and the prices seem about £40 - £50 for a pair. Is this reasonable? We've spent so much already and wondered if these really are an essential and if so are they any places we can get them cheaper?
Thanks
Jodie

You will fall over a lot - so essential in my view. Even more essential are wrist guards.
Enjoy your holiday.

Jode_123, OK . . . just imagine that you're going to drop yer ass straight onto a concrete pavement . . . from 2M
Cost/value is subjective . . . losing a couple of days on the hill is a lot more than a butt-pad

You'll also need to warm insulated undies for when you're sitting in the middle of the piste.....

Cheers guys, I've got wrist guards also.
Where can I buy the impact shorts from? Shops wise, Decathlon? Sport shops? I've seen some online stores which sell them but want to ensure they arrive on time!

Jode_123, I bought some youth sized Dainese impact shorts from S & R which fit me fine and are cheaper than the adult sizes I'm a size 5' 7" size 10/12

Jode_123, they're OK if they fit. No better than OK, coz there's not really much on-bum pro, and too much lateral hip pro that is quite redundant for snowboarders and more of a skier/skater requirement.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Masque, is that not ordinary?

comprex, not if you consider the average snowHead's penchant for pies . . . lots of pies . . . with fries . . . and, depending on whether you stand or squat, a large bucket of beer or Chardonnay

You know it makes sense.

Oh....I'm 5'6 and size 8....I better get the pies down before I go then - cheaper then buying some impact shorts

Jode_123, Snow and Rock . . . but she's right, you're probably slim enough to wear boy's stuff which will not have the same markup as adult gear (but will still meet all regs)

Cheers Masque,
I like being able to get into the kids stuff - no tax - makes such a difference!!!
Thanks, I'll check S & R out, have they got a website?

You could probably get away with a cushion and some duct tape.

If first boarding holiday means 'never boarded before' then expect a lot of falling over on the same two spots: knees and backside. The cheapest alternatives (note pleural) are bubblewrap down the trousers and kneepads. When you start to move without falling over all the time, you start to fall with more variation and impact shorts come into their own.
2 additional thoughts:
The injury which can be truly long-term disabling is a wrist injury; wear wrist guards.
Every ski resort sells impact shorts. You can try and buy there if you need to.
