Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A colleauge of mine spent a week Heliskiing in Gudauri about ten years ago. Sounded absolutely amazing. Certainly the pictures he brought back made me want to go out and jump in a plane in the direction of Georgia. It's also a LOT cheaper than doind the same thing in Canada. Unfortunately the place is in, or close to, a war zone now. Not so sure that I want to go down there at this point in time...
If you do go though then Gudauri is the place to go. Great Hotel, with all amenities, sitting in the middle of nowhere.

Hi, PP. The guy who used to fix my washing machine comes from that region. He told me his approach when flying back home was to travel via Germany to Tblisi to obtain the best fares, but this was a few years ago.

I never went, and wouldn't want to heliski if I did, but it does sound a very interesting destination.

There have been crashes of the old Russian military helicopters they use, but I don't know the recent track record of the operation. This is certainly a war-ravaged area of the old USSR so I'd take very careful and detailed advice before weighing up the odds.

There have been quite a few write-ups in the past, including mags like Powder. Maybe stick a posting in their forum on www.powdermag.com, or the www.epicski.com forum. I imagine a few US skiers have made the journey.

Obviously, let us know if you go!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Here's the address of an outfit in switzerland that organises trips to the Caucaus: http://www.alpintravel.ch/root_e/set.htm
I've heard that they are good. They used to be associated with Ernst Garhammer (former freestile world champion back in the 80s) here in Germany, who organises all sorts of powder events and powder courses. Not sure if they still are. They claim that the helicopters they use are very reliable!!!
