Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

So if you fall on piste and land off piste are you insured?

Here's a thought experiment;

You're skiing on a safe, well pisted blue run that happens to run alongside a cliff. You catch an edge (or whatever) and your modest momentum carries you over the cliff into an area that's well off piste.

Your insurance only covers you for accidents/rescues/etc. whiel on-piste. Your insurance company argues that you were extreme skiing.

Who wins?

under a new name there was a fairly well-publicised case, a few years ago, when an insurance company refused to pay up when a skier fell off a drag lift. They did meet the claim in the end but I can't remember whether the payout was described as 'ex gratia' ie whether the insurance company remained not liable in law (because the ski lift was off piste) but were, in effect, shamed into paying. In the instance you describe, when the accident - the catching of the edge - occurs on piste, I think the insurance company would have difficulty in wriggling out of liability.

under a new name, if they could claim that they'd also be refusing claims where motorists end up off road after an accident

In football, if a player is fouled outside the box - but lands inside the box, it's a free kick outside the box. Quote this in court in the event of any dispute, and you'll be fine wink .

 Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Hurtle, interesting, I wondered whether there was any precedence.

D G Orf, well, yes, but it's not that often that drivers deliberately leave the road whereas skiers often deliberately leave the piste - and in many cases proving tracks would be harder.

I've had more problems emerging from off-piste onto on-piste. There can be a bit of a drop, not always easily seen, and the piste is hard!

I remember a sH injuring himself on a piste and meeting the resuers whilst walking off to the side. He was banged extra for being stretchered off the off-piste bit.
