Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Via Lake Annecy and then drop down into Albertville and join the road to Bourg then onto Val !

You can go two ways.

Route 1 Autoroute - Come out of the airport and follow the signs for France. This will take you onto the motorway follow this for a few miles and you will come to the border, just after the border take the motorway signpost Annecy, this is a new section of motorway. Follow this to Annecy then to Grenoble then to Albetville and then take the road to Bourg St Maurice and then upto VDI. There are a few tolls and I think from memory it might be around £30 each way.

Route 2 Autoroute/National Roads - As above but when you get to the border follow the motorway towards Chamonix. Come of at Sallanches and take the road signposted Megeve/Albertville and follow this through Megeve to Eugine and then follow the road to Albetville. From Albertville you take the same road to BSM and VDI. There are only a couple of tolls which will cost about £5 max each way. The part between Megeve and Eugine is twisty but the rest is ok. Road is open in the winter and will be cleared if snow. Albertville can be a bottleneck as well.

I have driven both roads to BSM but never gone upto VDI so don't know how long this part takes but I think you would be looking at a good 3 hours on route 2 and possible 2-3 on route 1. Route 2 can get busy at weekends. Hope this helps.

Come out of Geneva airport - follow signs for France. Follow signs then for Grenoble on new bit of motorway (just opened in December). You can then either come off at Annecy and follow route around lake via Ugine on to Albertville, or stay on motorway and follow signs for Chambery and then Albertville, then you will find yourself on N90 to Bourg. Good journey on either route around 2 hours to Bourg, then around another 45 - 50mins to Val. Bear in mind this is the quickest time you will do it - prob around 4 hours on Saturday changeover days. Second route via autoroute however about 50k longer, just as quick because it is autoroute.

No offence to Muzza77 but do not go via Megeve. Road a nightmare and also closed through Valley D'arve so you have to take roundabout route via hills. Very twisty and not necessary unless you are going to Megeve!! Also a nightmare in snow!

franga, I wouldn't go via Sallanches and Megeve. The shortest (though not always quickest) route is the one Alex A mentions - take the signposting on the motorway to Annecy (this a new and recently opened section of motorway). Then come OFF that motorway at Annecy, signposted Ugine and Albertville and "Route Nationale" (ie not motorway). The section all down the length of the lake is slow, but interesting and can be beautiful if the lake is in the right mood. From Ugine it's fast dual carriageway to Albertville, and a new road along the river there much reduces the bottleneck quality of Albertville. From Ugine, then, it's dualled all the way to Moutier. Then slower - but there's no avoiding that. It's always a trek up to Val D'Isere, and in bad weather could easily take a good deal more than 3 hours.

pam w and Alex A are correct. Google maps gives the autoroute as 5 mins quicker, but is much longer and I'm not sure that the new road bypassing the centre of Albertville is taken into account. Come off the autoroute at Annecy Nord and drive straight down to the lake. Albertville is signed from there, then Moutiers and Val.

I prefer Annecy Sud, past the hospital. Less chance of getting snarled in traffic through the centre of town.

franga, You do not say if you are going by car or bus. If by bus then follow this link for bus timetebles and costs and also some require you to make a reservation.
