Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski school in Meribel

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi, I'm heading to Meribel in early March and would like to take some lessons. If I had to classify my ability it would probably be 'advanced' intermediate (can handle most runs confidently, and venture off-piste but not much grace in the deep powdery stuff Razz) but really need to work on things like technique on moguls, bumpy black runs etc.

Having ruled out private tuition as ruinously expensive I was thinking maybe the two day clinics some schools offer, or the small group tuition, would be best. Does anyone have any ski school recommendations or experiences to offer?

Thanks!

Ewan

EwanP, New Generation in Meribel is easy to recommend. A number of their instructors have joined snowHeads at the End of Season Bashes and they're excellent. Have a great trip snowHead

Angus Meldrum of Parallel Lines, my new hero. If he can improve my skiing, he can improve anybody's!

skimottaret, before going to Courchevel last week, I downloaded/printed half your website and it was absolutely invaluable! Really fantastic.

EwanP, another vote for Angus here as well. Cool First BASI instructor I ever came across and my God, what a difference he made to my skiing after spending a week with him. Very Happy

Hurtle, I knew you were chuffed when you PM'd me but, hero huh? Excellent! Cool Very Happy

EwanP, Parallel Lines have got a special 15% off offer on their lessons at the moment because the Euro is not looking very nice for folk these days. http://www.parallel-lines.com/index.asp

Good luck!

Anybody have any experience of Snow Systems? They do a 6 day course starting on Sunday which would be great for me.

EwanP, Big vote from me too for Angus Meldrum. He was so good I wanted to bring him home wink Turned my skiing around on an Inspired to Ski course. He also taught my husband on the off piste course and really knows his stuff. Whether you are expert or middling intermmediate (me), he will do you good. Phil of Parallel Lines also comes recommended. Both great British instructors.

Hurtle, Join the queue wink

No, seriously, you too were on the Courchevel ItS course?? I was taught by Angus in Tignes last December on Level 4 All Mountain and my husband William was taught by Angus in Courchevel for Level 6 Off Piste. In Courchevel I had Marie.

I think you either like Angus or not. I love his 'get on with it and deal with it', say it as it is approach. But, he is still very aware of how people are coping and can pick up on insecurities. He took me down a steep black and later said to my husband "I thought I was going to get a refusal at the first fence" when I reallys struggled to get in a first turn. The next day I cruised down the same black and Angus said "well, you've done it now so it will never bother you again". Great words and great approach. Just think that when you find something tough.

Glad you enjoyed his tuition.

His partner Phil is excellent too and I would certainly recommend him. Have immense confidence in both.

I'm going to be in Meribel at Easter. I had been planning on booking for one of the two 1/2 day Next Generation clinics. I'm now wondering whether to book one or two private lessons with Angus Meldrum instead - though I'd hate to think that I was depriving any female skiers of his company Very Happy

Yes, I am. Angus Meldrum is obviously a good instructor - and his female clients seem to get very possessive of him!

Got back from Meribel last night. Magic in Motion appeared very popular with the majority populus (Brits). Why not ESF?

sloop, ah, don't take the above comments out of context-they are only jesting Very Happy . You're right-he is a good 'un and always the professional I might add. I am sure if you too booked up with him you wouldn't be disappointed. I am a female as well as it goes but lots of blokes think he is excellent too. Very Happy

VolklAttivaS5, no worries, I guessed they were slightly tongue in cheek Smile I might well be extravagant and see if I can book a couple of 2.5 hour lessons with him.

sloop, well if you do so, then let us know how you get on. He tells it like it is mind so if you like that and you want to get on then it will probably be ideal. It doesn't have to be a private lesson either, it might be possible to join a group lesson that he is teaching perhaps. Good luck.

Looks like the conditions are picking up there in the 3V from the other threads with SNOW! Very Happy I wish I could go back asap. What date do you go then?

VolklAttivaS5, thanks, I'll let you know. Yes, I'd much rather an honest instructor than a flattering one. I'm not going to be there until 12 April - so I'm hoping that this April in the Alps is going to be like last year! Smile

Exactly. Strikes me as the ideal combo, but an instructor (any teacher, really) has to be a clever psychologist to carry it off. The class I was in had a fairly broad spectrum of ability and nerve, but Angus seemed to manage to push and cajole each individual in exactly the correct proportion to get the best out of them. Quite a gift.

And, apart from all that

he is quite fanciable. wink (Does he know that he has a snowHead fan club?! Laughing )

Hurtle, yes, it is clever. Another good one for this, although not much use this time to the OP as he is not Meribel based, is Rupert Goldring based out in Val d'Isere. He is a director of Mountain Masters and again very good.

EwanP I'm working as an independant ski instructor in Meribel & Courchevel. I have been working with New Generation (the two last years), was coaching the Gap students for moguls skiing. I'm an ex member of the french freestyle skiing specialise in moguls, i've been a freestyle coach in Megeve and Snowheads knows me because I was teaching in Val Thorens (EOSB 2008) with Dave and Euan from New Gen. My private ski lessons prices are competive. www.snowarea.net
Wish you a nice week in Meribel
