Daniel Albrecht, the Swiss super-combined world skiing champion, was airlifted to hospital after a bad crash while training for a World Cup downhill today. The crash happened on Kitzbuehel's Streif course in Austria, when he lost control approaching the bottom of the run. He is said to have suffered concussion and bruising to a lung. After treatment on the slope, he was flown to hospital, and was put into an artificial coma. ...Source: http://www.cnn.com/2009/SPORT/01/22/skiing.albrecht/

That looks an appaling fall, heel piec esheared from the ski, which is broken just behind the binding giving an idea of the forces involved. What we cannot see is the speed and thefore the energy his head hit the deck with. Lets hope he can make a full recovery

Swiss skier Daniel Albrecht, in an induced coma since suffering head and lung injuries in a rash last week, is now battling pneumonia.
Innsbruck University hospital --where albrecht is being treated --issued a statement on tuesday, indicating that he is receiving antibiotics for the lung infection and will be kept in a coma until the situation improves.

Todays update through Google Translator:
Dani has quietly on Sunday night and spent stable. Satisfied, the doctors also continue with the course of the skull-brain trauma.
In the last 48 hours the doctors tried the shrinkages in the lungs by a slight reduction of deep breathing and increased self-treatment. The lung has agreed to shrink but not improved. Dani was a further consequence again deeper into the deep and the ventilator has again taken over the complete breathing. To the shrinkages in the rear area of the lung is to be treated Dani is now regularly placed in prone position.
Initial successes are in the form of an improvement in lung function already seen.
Doesn't sound great but fingers crossed

This is the latest status report I have seen (in German): http://www.news.ch/Albrechts+Gehirndruck+definitiv+in+Ordnung/352304/detail.htm
Dani seems to be on the mend but it is a slow process, particularly with the lung injury. Hopefully the damaged lungs will respond more to the treatment in the next few days.
Here is my translation of the report:
Albrechts's brain pressure definitely all right.
Good news from Innsbruck at the start of the Alpine Ski World Championships: the pressure in Daniel Albrecht's brain need no longer be monitored. However, because of the lung problems he is still being kept in an artificial coma.
Recovery from the craniocerebral (skull-brain) injury is progressing without any complications. The 24-hour monitoring of the brain of the seriously injured skier could therefore be ended. The doctors have removed the sensor which had been placed 2 cms into the brain.
There are also slight improvements in the lung area. According to the health report from the Innsbruck University Clinic the therapy is showing a slow but continuous success.
Computer tomography shows that the massive inflammation of the lungs is improving. Antibiotics must still be used, however, since there may still be infection in the injured (shrunk) parts of the lungs. Because of the contraction in the lungs the patient is still being periodically turned onto his stomach for several hours.

Dani is now up and re-habing, but still pretty battered. The outlook remains uncertain

People often can't remember anything of that sort of accident. I wonder how it feels, when you emerge from weeks of intensive care in an artificial coma, to see the video of a fall which almost killed you. Brave man.
