The climbing world's happy-go-lucky competitions are going to experience dope tests - at least in Ireland.

McMullan's message conveys shock at the level of scrutiny now being applied to previously happy-go-lucky bouldering competitions |
How would dope tests affect non FIS competitors?] I believe FIS racers are subject to dope testing - but are they at a lower level? I wonder what the reaction would be if dope testing were brought in. Would the boarding fraternity be happy?

There are (or have been) dope tests at ESC (dry-slope) and Snowsport GB (alpine) level competitions in the past, and there have also been failed tests and bans given out. Some guy from Norfolk Ski Club IIRC, back in the early 90s. Let me try to dig up the details. Also may be worthwhile pm'ing paulhothersall as he was in charge of the ESC a few years ago when drugs testing was brought up.

achilles, my understanding of the situation is that they have to implement anti-doping measures as they are hoping to become an olympic sport. As there is snowboarding in the Winter olympics, then I presume that that is already subject to tests.

All races on the dryslope calendar do say that random dope testing can be carried out. Never known it to actually happen in the last few years but provision for it is certainly in the rules.

Hmm. Interesting. Hadn't thought about it before - but if this applies to climbers

At odds with these tests is the fact that hard climbing in the UK has traditionally had a rebellious edge, with many of the top-level protagonists often dabbling in recreational drug use: Pushing the limits of body on routes during the day, and experimenting with the limits of mind during the evenings. |
then I guess it applies to sliders, too.
