Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Best equipment to hire

 Poster: A snowHead

Found your wonderfull website and learned a great deal, may I ask for some advice:
As we live in a country far far away , which complicates traveling to Europe, don't really have the choice of buying equipment. We have rented so far( last 8 years once a year) and just never sure we are getting the good stuff. (actually completely clueless!)
How do we make sure we hire good equipment ? Is the VIP so much better than TOP sets?
Husband and I are very enthusiastic competent black skieers , kids (5 and 7) started last year in Zermatt. Planning trip first two weeks of March to Adelboden and Oz-en-oisans.

lizski, Welcome to snowHead

Check the website of the manafactuer while in resort and you will see very quickly what you have got. Faililng that

The top end skis should be stiff and have very little flex if you try to bend them,

Bases should be in good condition No gouges marks etc

Edges should be sharp, Rub with your fingernail if some gets left on the edge its sharp

Or just ask a ski instructor Very Happy

thanksOrdhan, planning first offpiste lessons and will ask instructor, just thought we could save some valuable skitime if we get the right skis first time. Is it worthwhile to pay more for the best package or just a brandname snob thing?

I get baffled by all this VIP and TOP malarkey as well.

Nice to know that you're "competent black skiers". Does that make it difficult to live in South Africa nowadays? Smile

No I'm just kidding. I'm also in the 'keen black run skier' category, although 'competent' might be stretching it a bit. I go for TOP rather than VIP (did so on recent Zermatt trip anyway) and got something pretty good.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

lizski, If you are going off piste try to get a ski with a underfoot width of about 82-88

Couple of suggestions that most rental shops carry

Atomic Nomad Crimson

Salomon Xwing Tornado

If you look at the websites for Salomon/Atomic/Rossi/K2 and Dynastar/Fischer. You will be able to see what there top end All mountain skis are before you go and you will have an idea of how good what you get in the hire shop is

For that joke to work, at all, it has to have been a typo where you meant to write 'black run skiers'.

If you are, in fact, of native African origin, then I probably look like a terrible racist.

I'm not by the way.

paulio, of course I meant black runs, just pulling your leg. See how easily everything gets a political twist in SA?

clive5, if I ski black runs it makes it easier to live anywhere. Smile

Back to topic: thanks Ordhan, will do some research before we hire this time.
