Poster: A snowHead
|
I am interested in doing a ski tour in Japan. I would prefer to do this with an organised trip as I will be travelling alone, does anybody have experience of this?
Also which resorts should I concentrate on visiting, I am an expert skier.
Is there anyone else out there interested in doing a trip like this? Aiming to leave at the beginning of February.

Downhill Sailor,
Firstly, forgive me if you know already any of what I say below. Also, none of this relates specifically to organised trips, since I have no experience of these. Below are just a few of my own comments on my experience skiing there.
I spent couple of years in Japan and love the place. Skiing-wise, most popular destination was Niseko without a doubt where we had some of the driest, fluffiest powder I've ever skiied in. It's on Hokkaido which is a flight from the main island. The beauty of this place is the off piste (providing you have the snow, of course). It's a sweeping generalisation, of course, but on the whole the Japanese are extremely respectful of the 'ski on the piste only rule', which leaves lots of untouched stuff for geijins (foreigners) who don't speak the lingo (well that was my story and I'm sticking to it!)
Apres in Niseko is focussed around the massive hotel at the bottom of the piste, but if you're feeling more adventerous, pop into town for crab - it's some of the best crab you'll taste, the place is famous for it. If you do go, PM me and I'll try and dig out the name of a couple of restaurants as I can't remember them right now.
Nagano is closer to Tokyo and so busy. Not the biggest hill you've ever seen but relatively compact. Never had as good snow here so off piste opportunities were more limited.
Wherever you go, make sure you get involved with onsen - Japanese hot bath, beats a hot tub in the states handsdown, especially if you can get one outside. Great way to end a days skiing.
Might also be worth getting this book and seeing where the guy mentions about Japan, he certainly skis in Japan on his travels -> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Skiing-Around-World-Ultimate-Descent/dp/9163171015?tag=amz07b-21

fatmansan,Happy New Year! Just to let you know I made it to Niseko.
The snow in this place is amazing. I have been here for a week now and we have had about 1.7m of snow!!
It was a great choice. I have another week here then I am going to check out Furano.
Did you manage to remember where you ate the amazing crab? I would like to check that out while I am here
