Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Last minute deal in Austria

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi, A group of us would like to book a last minute deal to Austria. We are thinking to get cheap flights to Salzburg, arriving on Thursday evening (22nd Jan) and depart 3 days later on Sunday evening. Flight availability seems good.

However trying to find accomadation close to one of the resorts is proving to be slightly trickier. Kitzbuhel has a ski race on that weekend so I think thats probably going to be mission impossible.

Does any Snowhead have a recommendation for a large Austrian resort close to Salzburg where we are likely to be able to get accomadation at this late stage, and if they do the best way to go about booking it? Ideally we would like to be with in walking range of the piste. We are trying to keep costs down but it doesnt have to be bargain basement.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Try tiscover.at for an accomadation search.

I was looking for someone yesterday and found an offer on their website for I think it was 3 (maybe 4?) nights in a spa hotel with liftpass for about €350. Check that out - I think that was the deal but the old brain might be fooling me!

Saalbach - Hinterglemm, is approx 90mins from Salzburg, good ski area, will definatley keep you entertained for a few days, and has a great toursit website with lots of B&B's, Hotel's etc on there, at cheap prices.

i've been trying to put together a cheap trip to saalbach as we did a day trip there last year from Zell and loved it, 7 nights for 2 people - cheapest flights were ryanair at about £220 return for both, for accom i tried the saalbach site and that tiscover.at site but its all ridiculously priced especially with the exchange rate. there's no way i could do it cheaper than one of the package operators like crystalski. but maybe i'm just not looking hard enough.

Packages seem to be cheaper than doing independant.

The whole Ski Amadé region is also easily reached from Salzburg, e.g. Flachau, Radstadt, Wagrain, etc. If you're hiring a car, it may be easier to find accommodation that isn't directly in a ski resort and drive a little each day.

MrSnowplough, see my brief post on the Kirchdorf thread. St. Johann is an hour from Salzburg but it may have an overspill from the Kitz weekend. Fieberbrunn has slopeside accommodation and away from the main pistes has some amazing skiing, including back country. Steinplatte is a cruiser's paradise but I don't think there's much to recommend the tiny village, Waidring, at the gondola base. Hope this helps, have a wonderful time wherever you end up.
