Anyone know anywhere I can get hold of a cheap shovel, I can't for the life of me see how some piece of cold forged alloy can set you back 50+ quid.

its amazing what they can over charge just cos its ski specific..wonder if a army surplus entrenching tool and pipe rods will make a good budget shovel and probe combo

It's the same with weddings. Put the word "ski" or "wedding" in front of anything and you can up the price by 300%

papasmurf,
I've a spare brand new Voile snow shovel with a saw built into the handle. The saw is for cutting wood (branches I assume). I'm happy to sell it for £40 plus P&P.
PM me if you're interested.

spyderjon,
I think you can use the saw for snow or wood. It's described as T-Wood Shovel (it's got a T handle but it's not made of wood).

spyderjon, no it's actually for ad hoc amputations

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

papasmurf, ..hmmmm My shovel is big and heavy in comparison to most, which can be a pain to carry but it will shift anything I am strong enough to take on... it will not bounce off hard snow or buckle under a ski boot like some I have seen.
After a slide you aren't likely to be be moving soft fluffy stuff ..it will be heavy and set...
Buy something that you know will do the job...some of the light BCA ones are not butch enough IMV..and they aren't alone.
This is the minimum standard you should be using, IMV..

and the Expert will shift mountains but is heavier....1100g..!!!! but a bollocking shovel
http://en.ortovox.com/safety_products/shovels/expert.html just make sure it fits your pack
