Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A snowHead
Hi people , i have some old
Volkl
4*s which i am going to lend to an absolute first timer so they can keep costs down. The skis have had their fair share of knocks but the edges are still good. What i'm wondering is shall i de tune them and whats the best way to take the 'edge off them'. Ta

No. If they "need detuning" they are a) too long for that person or b ) that person needs better boots or c) both

Go ski.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

, I'm only guessing, but I would have thought an expert skier needs well tuned skis to get the top end out of them that they are designed for and that the same skier would notice the difference in a non-tuned ski, but I wouldn't have thought a novice would be able to tell whether a ski was properly tuned or not. In reality it might give a novice more confidence particularly on hard pack snow if they knew that the edges were lovely and sharp - I am still at the novice end of things and 'know' that that bit of knowledge about my skis is what's got me down some rather more scary bits. I'd be tempted to suggest leaving well alone, but understand that's from the perspective of being a novice myself rather than an expert on ski tuning.

My thoughts were that they could be a bit grabby for a beginer as most rentals beginers get are blunt as f**k, but looks like i will leave them alone and see how they get on.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
