Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Staying safe when you fall/slip on a steep run ?

Yes, that would work well - same principle - get the tiny pole tip dug in. Though he is in danger of bending or breaking his pole. On a steeper slope he'd need to get the ski edges in too - which I notice he isn't (I think the pole wouldn't be enough to stop him). In that case he might not need the pole.
I just modified my post above and then found you had posted.

snowball, which begs the question, should one crank up the bindings settings when skiing such slopes? Which is the better risk balance, the risk of injury through no-release, or the risk of lost skis adding to one's problems?

I don't crank up my settings, even though they are quite low (6.5, since I am an ageing bloke). About the steepest I would wish to ski is something like The Tunnel, at ADH - which I am told is 38° at the top. I think I have skied something slightly steeper initially - but only for the first turn or 2.

No, I would only crank up bindings on a very occasional big face where a fall would be quite likely to be fatal (and the loss of skis would anyway require outside rescue).
I should have done on the occasion in Alagna but didn't. I've only done it on a couple of occasions I can remember.
I already have my bindings set at 8.5 for forward release and 8 for sideways which is necessary to prevent frequent unwanted release, but rather high for my age and fitness.

Many thanks for the explanation, snowball, that does make it clearer. I'm not sure that I have been pushing up as I slide, though I would certainly be trying to make the edges grip. And as you say, the proper technique is more important on steeper slopes. Most "normal" black pistes may not be steep enough to absolutely require the push-up method. But I'll try to remember in future!

Thanks folks for all your replies, not planning to fall again but if I do, I'll know what I should do. Spyderjon in the pic above is the skier pushing himself off the snow and just digging in the ski pole (as a brake)
Thanks

A lot of good stuff here. I can't add much except that I have had a 300 m slide and I can say
1) Read Kamikaze's link . 2 ) Be like the cat, think in the air as you fall, get feet down , head up . 3 ) Try for "stop as you land" otherwise you instantly speed up and may never slow. 4 PRACTICE this self-arrest .

When I had my fall I hadn't heard of it. Since then I have, but only here have I resolved to practice it. Thanks, all.
