Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Insurance for Expats

 Poster: A snowHead

I understand there are quite a few uk expats on here. what travel + winter-sports insurance do people recommend for a UK citizen resident in Germany (and registered as Gernan tax-payer etc) ?
Every UK insurance co. seems to do policies only valid for uk residents whose travel begins & ends in UK. My German bank's policy doesn't explicitly state anything about winter-sports etc., but at 9euro/year, I don't think I want to rely on it! (and it certainly won't cover cancellation, bad weather etc.)
(So much for EU integration huh?)

I lived in Germany for a few years and didn't find this much of a problem. We used a broker up in Frankfurt who specialises in ex-pats, she got us a policy that seemed ok for 40 odd euro a year. The policies will cost way, way less than the UK. Like any insurance you need to check the coverage. I can let you have the womans name if you PM me, she's OK and seems competent.

Lived in Munich for 2years and the only insurance I ever had was the DAK medical card (state-run medical insurance). No-one else I knew, locals or expats alike, had anything more. Likewise, no-one had skiing-specific insurance.

Woman of the time (native & local) considered this more than adequate, and we skied Germany, Austria, Switzerland....

However, we were so close to the slopes that things such as cancellation didn't occur (simply found something else to do and waited 'till the following w/e) and as ski-kit insurance isn't really worthwhile, only medical cover was of any concern. Maybe a slightly different situation to yourself.

Company medical insurance covers me once I get to the hospital. Seriously considering taking up insurance with the Austrian AA equivalent (ÖAMTC) as they will cover helicopter lifts from all over Europe to the hospital.

I'm not so interested in the medical coverage, as I already get this through the company (although like any insurance co, they would try wangling their way out of paying).
What I'm after is not just for Skiing, but annual multi-trip travel insurance (which usually includes the wintersports, or is at least an option for a small fee). My plans for the year include at least 2 weeks on the slopes, summer trips to US & Canada, maybe South Africa if I can get the time, plus numerous short trips back to the UK (which might be covered byt the company insurance).
ie not just the medical part, but personal liabiltity, airport delays, missed filghts, cancellation, lost luggage, piste closure, and all the extras.

andy, I've just taken out cover with Direct Travel on line and the 2 key clauses (not quoting exactly) were a place of residence in UK (which I have altho' I haven't lived in the place for yonks) and registered for UK tax (which I am altho' I've not paid any for yonks). So I reckoned that I was entitled to the cover and my skiing trip does actually start and finish in the UK though I don't recall reading anything about that on line. Haven't seen the full policy documents yet as they are being posted to the UK address. The white lie I did tell them was to ignore my childhood asthma (have you ever had breathing problems ?). When I told the truth about that it wouldn't give me an on-line quote.

I have no UK address, nor have I been a UK tax payer since 1999. Technically that makes my E111 (if that still means anything) a worthless scrap of paper.
The insurance I had in Holland until 1 yr ago was basically the same as a UK annual policy, but when I went to renew it, I realised they have the same clauses (Dutch Residency & Tax). Now I am in Germany & German tax payer, but the policies I've seen offered for Travel Insurance so far only seem to be an 'extra' to the national medical card to cover overseas.
A letter to European Competition Minister is in order I think! (I have a few of those to send for other reasons too)

I use these guys for an annual policy as andy describes.

andy, the E111 is useless anyway if issued before 31/12/04. Everybody needs to get new ones. Anyone interested stick E111 into the search engine. WTFH gave a link where you can download but it still has to be validated at a Post Office.

Here's a link to Worldwide travel insurance who might give you the cover you are seeking. Only stipulation seems to be you have lived there for minimum 12 months and only round trips returning to country of residence are covered. Not particularly cheap at £149 annual multi trip and only 14 days winter sports cover.

I am a UK expat living in Munich. My health insurance is through axa ppp which offer specific policies for expats which includes travel/on-piste ski insurance atcompetitive prices- I think they may also offer separate travel insurance for expats. I've also managed to do a consumer test on the cover when I broke my leg skiing a few years ago and they were fine. BUPA also offers an expat service as well.

David@traxvax, not suprising - there's a lot of good industry there with strong UK links - eg BMW (cheif designer at BMW is English !!), Seimens; 2 major International Schools (why I was there), 1 minor one, and etc. Plus, it's real handy for the mountains !

When I was living in Belgium as an expat, I used Worldwide Travel insurance, no problems apart from insurance to/from Belgium as a home country which for me was fine They might be a bit on the expensive but their winter insurance is comprehensive, including proper off-piste insurance and racing (the latter at a small premium)

My family and I will be living in France next season from Dec to April and I was planning on using the E111 and maybe a carte neige for immediate mountain cover ie helicopter/blood wagon etc if needed (hopefully not!). Am I misguded and should I organise other insurance, is the carte neige neccesary ? We will still be UK residents.
