Spent a couple of weeks in the Banff National Park area, just got home on Wednesday. Great ski-ing at all resorts, and there are lots to choose from. Favourite probably the Sunshine Village, with ski-ing for all levels of ability. Friendly part of Canada, and English speaking which is a bonus, but due to the exchange rate, rather pricey day to day ski-ing when you add it all up. Nevertheless it is very beautiful, and there is plenty else to do, (we went caving at Rats Nest Cave, Canmore, saw top-notch ice hockey at the Saddledome, Calgary, and visited the amazing dinosaur mueseum a couple of hours drive from Calgary) so I would definitely go back.

Sunshine does have some great skiing. If the cover is good though, Lake Louise is hard to beat. And this area comes into its own in Spring normally.

Hi Toadman - looking good out there. Season should hopefully come together out west any day now. With luck I'll be in Snowbird end Feb, and Lech in march with the usual crew
Did you know there was skiing in Maryland? Neither did I. I may test it tomorrow. Hope you'll be at Crystal or still ripping up Utah.

Just got my legs cooked at Snowbird today. Wind, blowing snow, and clouds, which is a recipe for tough skiing. But it's added base building material for later in the year. Off to Seattle, and then to Bend, OR for Christmas. Hopefully they got some snow too.
Gortonator, let me know how you make out with the skiing in Maryland. Glad you are getting back to Lech. We will probably venture to interior BC in February, or maybe Montana. Have no set plans as of yet. May just wait and see what Mother Nature brings!

Tis the best way - follow the snow. My other half is now working full time, so we're a little more restricted. Hopefully a few 4-5 day road trips up into Vermont will happen. We'll be at Red mid January too - gotta check out that new terrain.

I think we timed this weekend pretty well with the snow conditions. A slow start was spruced up by a 2 foot+ storm the weekend before, and this brought Red close to my 'it'll be well covered' measure of 1.5m on the snow report. There were a few twigs sticking out of groomers (more as weekend went on), and the cliff bands required more care than usual to navigate in places, but the skiing was pretty good overall. As it was sunny, the north-facing terrain was the place to be, and this held up well all weekend.
The new terrain on Grey looked fabulous, but much of the front side was sun exposed and hence pretty solid in the mornings, and only softening for an hour or so after lunch. With a slow lift, that's a short window. It's very different to Granite -more rolling and open than steep and tight trees - which adds excellent variety to an already epic ski hill.
It's been a slow start all around in the Pacific Northwest, and has been sunny since we left. The January doldrums seem to have set in. I hope they break for those of you heading out there soon.

Spent 4 days at Snowbird, Utah during the last weekend of Feb. It's been a slow year there, but we were lucky enough to get 20+ inches during our visit. This was far from typical Utah pow - heavy, solid stuff, but still lots of fun and and at least it covered a fair few rocks, allowing us to hit some fun lines off the Cirque Traverse on the last two days. Powder days at Snowbird are crazy busy things in the mornings though, so it's hard to get lots of fresh lines especially with a good chunk of the mountain closed. Lots of pics and a report at:

Mt Bachelor in the Oregon Cascades regularly delivers epic Spring skiing. This trip in early May comprised one sunny day, and 5 where you'd never have guessed it was Spring. There was close to 2 feet of new snow during our stay, some pretty wet, some high quality mid winter pow. The skiing was pretty darn fine.

They stay open until Memorial weekend. There's still over a 100 inch base, so I think we'll have to head back for some more.
