Poster: A snowHead

Hi folks,
Taking the plunge and driving to Les Arcs with a couple of friends in january.
We`re driving to Dover from Manchester on fri evening staying in a B&B to get the 0640hrs ferry on sat morning , arriving in Calais at 0910 approx, then straight to the resort with a couple of short breaks for a leg stretch etc.
We come back on thurs afternoon (ferry is at 1610hrs) and the plan is to have weds on the slopes and do half the journey back to calais late weds afternoon/evening and pitch up in a formule1 cheapy and enjoy a nice meal out, continuing in the morning to calais.
Were would you recommend we stay over ? dont really want to be driving more than 4hrs on the weds and was thinking reims/dijon/troyes ?
Thanks simon

bigsando, you won't do Reims in 4 hours from Les Arcs. I'd be inclined to just see how I feel. Most Formule 1 hotels are (in my experience) absolutely miles from anywhere where you could get "a nice meal out". We once turned into Dijon, because of freezing fog on the motorway, and nosed our way into town following signs for a 2 star hotel. Turned out to be very central, big room, not as cheap as Formule 1 but didn't break the bank, and a few local enquiries soon saw us at a bistro. You'd probably get to somewhere around Chaumont; there might be some characterful places to eat and stay round there, but I've not found any!

Thanks Pam, I`ve got a friend looking at it at the minute who used to spend a lot of time driving to bourg, funnily enough he said the same thing about the formule1 hotels being a fair trek from the towns !!! back to the drawing board i think !

I've stayed in Dijon. Within 4 hours of Les Arcs. Booked through Active Hotels. Found a great Bistro, good steak, with Dijon Mustard and a bottle of Burgundy of course.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

There is an Ibis at Bourg en bresse just on the services on the motorway.

Dijon isn't too big, and the centre is quite characterful - if you want a pleasant evening rather than just "put your head down" in an out of town shopping area somewhere, you could do a lot worse.

Beaune is a pretty nice place to stay too, and the centre is not too far from the autoroute. Hotel de la Paix http://www.hotelpaix.com/ was fine, with a decent breakfast, and near to several reasonably priced restaurants.

On the way back we usually stay here http://www.le-val-moret.com/
Close to the m'way - but not so close it's noisy. Excellent rastaurant. Is motel like in a way, in that you can take your car around to your room - excellent with kids as saves lugging loads of stuff around.
Is 4 hours from Calais
