Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Please help a solo skiier!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi everyone,
I am planning a ski trip to Europe (preferably France or Italy, ive been to Andorra and America) for sometime at the end of January or February 2005. I am a 34 year old female, im pretty sociable and outgoing and like to party. Unfortunately, none of my friends ski so it looks like i'll be going on my own. So the help i need is: where is the best place to go to meet other 30 somethings? Ive considered Val D'Isere but im not sure if it would be a bit young for me? Ive looked at friendship travel and solo holidays but both were fairly expensive and very limited on places. Should i book a hotel or a catered chalet? Or does anyone have any space on their chalet holiday? I live in Exeter but i am willing to travel to Gatwick etc .
Any help or advice is gratefully received!
Thanks
Smile

funky angel,

Hi, You know solo women skiers are like gold dust don't you...??

Don't know so much about the best places to go to meet other 30 somethings but you have probably come to the right place to start with. Seems pretty friendly to me and I am sure you can hook up with someone.

Have a look round at the threads and see what appeals..!!

Welcome to Snowheads funky angel,

Did you check out Neilsons ? I think they have a notice board where people travelling on their own can arrange to meet up / share with other people?

Not sure if there is a resort best suited to 30 somethings, but any of the resorts I've been to in Austria and France had a good mix of ages.

Pas de La Casa In Andorra was a younger crowd when I was there, so I wouldn't recommend that. The apres in the States where I skiied wasn't great, and similarly in Canada and Norway, the nightlife wasn't great for meeting people, and it was a case of making your own fun.

I really enjoyed the nightlife in Alpe d'Huez in France, Soll and Westendorf in Austria, and all had a good mix of ages.

I found Mayrhofen over run with the Dutch (not knocking the Dutch .. but if you don't speak the language, it might not be a great place if you're travelling solo !!). And Stuben in Austria was very quiet a night .. although the linked resort of St Anton is probably much livelier.

I'm sure there are lots of other resorts, but speaking from experience, I would probably suggest Soll or Westendorf, as they are smaller than Alpe d'Huez, so you tend to bump into the same people (which might help if you are on your own).

Have a ball whereever you go Laughing

I would try and find a chalet, somewhere where all the house guests get to know each other pretty quick and you can always team up with a group of skiers from that chalet. There are one or two threads on here where people are arranging to meet up with others. And in most of the cases they will not have met previously, I think...

funky angel, a Club Hotel style holiday could suit your budget and get you in touch with other people if not necessarily solo travellers. If it's refectory style seating in the dining room it's easy to talk to the others. Neilsens and Crystal do them. If you can find a resort with a ski leading service that will also give you an intro to a group to ski and socialise with. Unfortunately the ESF makes ski leading by T.O.s somewhat rare in France. I've done lots of solo trips and I always preferred hotels since I can talk to more people in the bar than you are going to find in a chalet. I can't give you any suggestions for how to get the 30 somethings though - you might have to relax on that.

funky angel, if you can find somewhere in Wengen, Switzerland during the First 2 weeks in Feb I'll ski with you, I'm staying at the Hotel Alpenrose during that time which I reccomend as having a good atmosphere, however they may be full. There are also reps from the SCGB and DHO ski clubs in the resort, where the DHO has it's own meeting hut for early evening drinks (free !) and you can ski once for free with each of the clubs before joining which is a good way to meet people

funky angel, Welcome to SHs, have a look at http://www.skiolympic.co.uk my son's doing a season with them and he's saying there are a lot of people of your generation staying with them and many singles (espesh' with cheap last minute deals). It is a 'club hotel / chalet type of holiday so you'll have no prob with hooking up with like minded souls. I'll have a look myself next week and see if he's talking out of his butt! Anyway, the way things are going, wherever you choose there'll be a bunch of SnowHeads knocking around to show you the mountain and the craique.

Masque,

I've just checked the Olympic link and I wonder if I've missed something. There don't appear to be any prices / availability sections there - am I being dim? Puzzled

Red Leon, there are prices. Go to an individual resort then there is a price tab in the heading above the photo. Opens a new skinny window. But I can't find details of availability or single supplements ??

Red Leon, From past tales it's best to call them and turn on the charm and very last minute is the way to grab the deals when they just want to fill spaces, Last year someone got a week in LaRoz for 120

funky angel, I notice you have not posted since your virgin post of yesterday afternoon. I hope we have not scared you off.
First, as JT mentions, single lady skiers - especially young lady skiers - are very much in demand. I have only resisted making gruesome gropey comments by reciting Latin verbs as I write. You sound gorgeous to me. If snowHeads can't find you a companion, then we should pack up immediately.
As for Val d'Isere being too young for you - where on earth did you get that idea? It's full of aging English civil servants well past their sell-by date.

Hi again everyone and thanks for your replies, i'm really suprised how many people have offered me good advice - thanks. Oh and its a very kind offer D G Orf Wink and i'll have a look at Wengen for sure!
I feel quite reassured that wherever i go i wont be short of a drinking and skiing companion or two, i've never been described as gold dust before!
I think i'll probably try a club hotel with a bar (rather than a chalet) for more people to talk to... Soll and Alp D Huez look good but Jonpim, you have put me off Val D'isere a bit (ageing civil servants?!)
Ill post again with where i am going and the dates in the hope of finding a ski buddy Smile
