Hi
My hubby wants a pair of ski boots, first time purchase for him as he's only come into the world of skiing over the past 2 years and finds the hire boots horribly uncomfortable.
Any recommendations / advice on buying new boots and where from?
Price not really an issue, but comfort/fit is VERY important.
We will be living in Austria (ski piste at the side of our house!) full time from early next year so he'll get his use out of them!
Any where in the Sheffield - Leeds - Hull triangle would be good 
We're off skiing end of Feb so he must have them before then.

Suzanne, well you've got Slush & Rubble at Sheffield and Ellis Brigham in Castleford. There's also Severn Sport at Armley, Leeds but after those three I'd be struggling to think of anyone.
I bought a new pair of boots a couple of months ago from Ellis Brigham and was pretty impressed with the way they went about the fitting, so they'd be my pick.

If you are going to live in Austria I would buy them from the Village resort you will live in...but if the timing does not quite coincide then I don't think there is much wrong with Snow and Rock or EB. Of course the salesman will probably be on commission but that does not make his knowledge bad. He should not have too much of a problem with a reasonable fit as long as he hasn't got anything major wrong with his foot shape. Ask the shop if they will make any adjustments to get a really good fit. This might entail blowing the boot out in one of two places and so you will not be able swap them but you should get a really good fit out of them.
As I say unless he has really odd feet then they should be able to get a good fit in very comfortable boots

Slush & Rubble were offering a comfort guarentee when we bought our boots a year ago. They got a fit which was "close enough", Mrs H needed to get thermally moulded insoles "in resort".
Hope your move to Austria goes well - I'm jealous

If you're moving to Austria it really sounds an increasingly bad idea to me to buy boots in the UK for both the reasons marc gledhill gave and those I mentioned. However, as JT says unless you've real odd feet you may be OK. Personally, I've been in to local specialist 5 times now to get the boots fitted right.
Sounds to me as if you'll be wearing the boots a lot, not sourcing them locally is a compromise I'd not accept.

We move to Ausrtia next May, but going skiing 26th Feb for a week.
Will arrive Sat noon, so want to be able to head straight onto the piste at the side of the house, not spend hours getting boots fitted!
I will probably use the new boots for only 1 week in this season, then throughout the 05/06 ski season, assuming I haven't bought another new pair over there.
I have never had a pair of hire boots that didn't give me trouble, so I MUST have my own boots.
I also want to break them in before Feb.

Yep, well thermally moulded footbeds and foamed liners. Although they do thermally mould the liners of the Salomon range.
Is that what you mean?

I just know I want a pair that fits properly, and have heard that boots with the moulded insert for your foot ( footbeds?) are better?

I think custom footbeds are worthwile as they are supposed to make the boot and ski work more as one...It makes the fit better and there foreless slop in the boot. But I feel that was only a real issue with the old rear entries and nobody uses them now...!!! I know I might flamed here but nobody SHOULD be wearing them now. A good boot and a good fitting from a shop that knows what they are doing should be enough.
One thing about hire though....if you are a bit picky you should not put up with poor boots and skis. The shop should have nearly new stock and only if you have odd feet should this be an issue. Whether you want to 'share' boots is another issue.
Though once you get your own boots all this should be behind you..!!

I've had boots from both EB Castleford and S&R at Sheffield and both made the same error in their fitting/set up which was only correctly diagnosed by Profeet in London - which is probably too far for you to travel.
Custom heat moulded footbeds are a must and most boots these days have heat mouldable foam liners.
I'd definately take ise's advice and source them in resort as any tweaks can be done easily/for free.
Don't worry about the 'break-time' as if they're fitted correctly just a few hours of home wear/skiing will do the trick, especially if you do some ankle flexing exercises in them.

Taking on advicce, I'm going to buy my new boots at the resort in Austria at one of Rudi Huber's shops in Wagrain - thought it would be a good idea to buy from a local shop as we will be moving there in May

They do the moulded insoles, foam liners and can modify / stretch / reshape boots so hope to get a good fitting boot !
And if I go to the one in the middle of town( Atomic Centre) Rudi serves you himself!

wagrainSki, good decision, you'll be able to make a few trips into the store and get something that's perfect. It's not generally required to go for foam inners for fit purposes, pushing the shells is more effective in the first instance. A lot of people get foam inners when the supplied inner falls apart if they're still happy with the shell itself.
