Put em on the front, or the back. Or do you *need* both? I'd favour the back, but wonder what people think.

James the Last, from what I can remember from the Subarus I've owned the 4 wheel drive is split 60/40 in favour of the front wheels, so I would put them on the front. BTW I have a set of chains for sale that were last used (once) on an Outback estate if you're interested.

Put them on the front.....best to have traction on the wheels that do the steering!

None - just bu tsome proper tyre and do it all sideways with style!

I am aware of the 60:40 split, but... you're much better having more grip on the back, else the car is inclined to oversteer; but with too much power at the back it'll go round in circles.

James the Last, I'd rather oversteer than understeer. Oversteering is something I can do a little bit about; understeering normally ends up in the ditch, or worse. Get this decision wrong and your login name might be prophetic

Its def the front, put em on the back and you will be fine until you need to go round a corner, then the back wheels will just keep pushing you in a straight line.....which can be very exciting in the Alps

Defo on the front, I checked this when I got my legacy, with the intention of going to the mountains.
Never taken it up mountains, but I has fun on snowy days in Northumberland without chains and going sideways
I think the handbook also said chains on all four was a good idea too. but if only two, then on front.

Dumb suggestion from non-subaru owner, but why not fit two sets of chains and have grip all round?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Twice the expense, twice the pain of fitting the damn things. A Subaru and decent winter tyres would get through most road conditions in the Alps I'd have thought? If I took my own car out there more often I'd go for a Legacy or an Outback.

Agree with lampbus, , I had a Legacy and handbbook said chains on front. I only used them once but they worked well.

You know it makes sense.

I had a legacy once and without chains it handled over a foot (about 18") of fresh snow no problem at all with no chains and ordinary road tyres. You might not need the chains but I would have thought the front would be best, but that said IIRC its a viscous diff that splits the power so I dont know if the non chained wheels would spin up under power in the snow???

it's so unpredictable. In some sorts of snow, a foot of fresh is no problem (fresh snow is often less slippy, it depends on the state of the road when it fell) but have also had to stop to put chains on top of snow tyres in a few centimetres of slush, up a not terribly steep hill. Even after 6 winters I find it very difficult to predict exactly when I'm going to need chains. I tend to err on the side of caution so I can put them on at a time and place of my own choosing.

Once the snow turns to slush and then freezes into ice... you have real problems. You may be able to drive in but will you be able to get back out?My chains managed to get my front wheel drive (old escort) out of la Grave one winter when the roads were a real nightmare.

With my car I have the option of 2 wheel (front) or 4 wheel (60:40 front:rear) drive. If I need to use chains I'd put them on the front wheels.
My question is, with the chains on should I use 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive

Sounds like an X Trail................lock the diff 1st................ if that's not enough add chains to the front with the diff locked!

My wife and I both drove in to work in the Cotswolds in 6 inches of snow, me in my Pug 306 with snow tyres, she in the Forester. One of us did a 360 off the road, and it was in the Scooby with no chains. However, when we drove out of the Alps after 2m continuous snow with chains (on the front) we never even faltered, over an icy farm track because the main road out of the village was closed. Scary but successful

Martin Nicholas, but that's women drivers for you....
but seriously - when I was sliding around in my car 2 weeks ago on snow - I wished I was in my wifes Forester with or without the chains - and another vote for the front wheels btw...
