Apart from the lovely views as you come in to land, I though Salzburg was rubbish last season. About fifteen flights arrived at the same time and baggage reclaim was a free-for-all from those tall wheeled trailer-things. I never thought I'd long for a baggage carrousel...

This is an interesting one. I've skied on the Zugspitze above Grainau, which is a high-altitude ski area, with about an 800m vertical (topping out at about 2800m). I'm not aware that there are skiable runs from there down to Grainau (750m). The main ski area around there (Garmisch-Partenkirchen) goes from about 700m up to 2000m, but is physically separate from the Zugspitze zone.
Anyone got any more knowledge of this, in relation to the "over 2000m vertical" statement above?

I note that the "2000m vertical drop" is not claimed to be skiable - would it be possible to throw oneself from a suitable position and fall that far?

Not vertically. You'd have the discomfort of tumbling and cartwheeling down the face of the Zugspitze, with various limbs falling off, if my memory of the skiability of that mountain is correct.

They say there's a 1351m vertical, which I reckon refers to the Osterfelderkopf-Hausberg area along the valley (where the Garmisch downhill is held).

Geneva must be at the bottom. Most of us have to go through the airport and it is simply not big enough in the eating and shopping area

I'm doing Doncaster to Turin this season. I don't mind Doncaster, it's modern and compact and the parking isn't a two mile trek away, but it's not as convenient as East Mids. No idea about Turin, but I'll be so excited on arrival that I won't care if it's a pigsty...

chrisb, There are numerous extensions and refurbishments going on at GVA. Some finished, some still underway. But they are trying to make it better. The new Swiss Chalet in arrivals opposite the car hire desks is my favourite respite from the madness at present. This may change when the upper level extension is complete.

If I have to wait for any length of time I walk from GVA into the train station and there's a nice pizzeria there which does good food at much more reasonable prices than anywhere in the airport.

Why do journalists get paid for producing meaningless rubbish? Like the "Best Ski Area in Europe" thread started by DG, this report is written by someone trying to justify their existence.
The Best Airport is the one you spend the least time in. Because we have to spend ages in the airport then the facilities to keep us comfortable become important.

It's made up by people like you, Swiller. People who name Sion (ever tried to get a flight to Sion?) but forget one of Europe's primary ski airports - Lyon.

I had a hack friend of mine, who does a bit of stuff for the internet, ring me the other day and ask if I could help him out with some info for skiers (he's not a skier) using cross-Channel ferries to get to the Alps. I rattled off some info, but I wasn't being paid for it, so I probably forgot half of what I should have told him.

Aux Bonnes Choses ? We've had many a pizza in there as well. Its downstairs sandwich/coffee bit does really good pastries as well.

Sorry but have to disagree with the shout for Chambery. There's always complete chaos at check-in, barely anything in terms of shops, and only a small cafe which is usually rammed full. Its great in that its close to the resorts for sure, but its really a terrible little airport! Lyon is much better, but then you have the trade-off of it being another 90 minutes away from the resorts.
I was delayed flying home from Chambery once for 6 hours, and it was excruatingly boring, there is literally nothing to do.

David Goldsmith, listen, it says "top 5"... that can mean anything from most popular, best facilities, shortest transfer etc. Personally I like the private jet terminal at Farnborough. THE top ski airport by definition must shirley be Courchevel.

Swiller, if you'd just confessed to your private-jetset aspirations at the outset you'd have been respected. Courchevel Altiport is clearly the best ski airport in Europe.
I have a personal fondness for Bourg St Maurice railway station, where people get less stressed-out than airports.

Big fan of Zurich - straight onto the wonderful Swiss Train system - plus a quick pit stop in Zurch BHF for gluwein in their outdoor bar is a fab start to a ski holiday

Salzburg is the absoute pits, especially on the way home and when through security, which you have to go through early these days coz of queues: that awful barn of a departure lounge is always packed and way too hot with no facilities or seats. I hate it. Like Geneva though, as much as you can like an airport. It's much more user friendly. As for British airports, even though it's only 35 mins away I'll pretty much go anywhere to avoid Manchester because of the queues. Liverpool is close to home and okay and we always try to organise so we go to the old airport hotel for lunch and that is a fab on the way treat. Birmingham ditto even though it's an hour and a halfish drive from home on the Wirral. Two years ago I went to NZ, visiting daughter and the resort she was working in and couldn't believe the relaxed atmosphere on the flights (proper cutlery!) and at Auckland, Queenstown and Christchurch airports; it was a world away in all senses from the horrors of European flights and airports in recent years. We spent many years travelling by ski train and coach and even though it's a slog, especially on the homeward journey with no anticipation of the holiday to come, I'm considering those ways of travelling again.
