Poster: A snowHead

where can i get an indication of what ski length for an all mountain ski. Ive hired variously advised sizes before - everything from 146 to 160, and im all confused now. Im female, 5ft 3", 53kg, fit, and wanting to be able to have a ski that can handle some off piste but still be great on piste doing short radius. Any suggestions or places to check out for guidance?
cheers

You're exactly the same size as my wife. She has piste skis at 156 cm and all mountain skis at 163 cm. God knows who skis shorter length ladies skis than that apart from kids and complete beginners?

eerrrr, intermediate, but then most people say that. Reds in good condition, but planning to nail the ice technique and blacks during week after next when im on a course in Tignes
UKtarilmonster - 163s sound really long - is she a really fab skiier?

Snoworks ?
Mrs Ski has the following. Piste - 155 Solly 3V slalom. 'All mountain' - K2 Apache Recon - 160 (bit short IMV) , Powder, La Grave, Ski Touring - K2 Phat Luv 170. She's a bit taller and heavier than you.

bitoffluff, id go with uktrailmonster, 156 would defo be the better option as you will have more control on a shorter ski especially if you want to nail some blacks!
which length ski did you ski last year? all these are important due to how in control you feel, also if you are renting theres no harm in asking if you can change for a shorter or longer if your not getting on with them,
also with the ski reccomendation id stay with an piste carving ski for the minute and get your carving perfect these skis will be fine for a bit of off piste at the side of a groomed piste.

bitoffluff, She's a reasonable skier, but certainly not an expert. She can ski reds with confidence and good technique and easy blacks with caution. She's only just learning to ski off-piste. Probably similar to you?
Her all mountain skis are a bit longer for off piste, but they're also slightly twin tipped so ski a bit shorter than they look. I can't see much point in her going shorter than 155 cm for a general piste ski or 160 cm for off-piste. I think her current piste skis at 156 cm are ideal and she's never had a problem with short radius turns.

well, there the thing - 160s and couldnt control them at all (bit was trying off piste for the first time). The swapped for 150s and skis went their separate ways in powder with legs still attached - ACL bye bye! They were really hefty and stiff though, so may have made a difference in how they ski and reason they felt bigger than they were. Im tempted to start short and work my way up rather than the other way round as i dont think we will be hitting powder right off.

I've been wondering this. I sold my skis (Atomic SX9 174cm) as I felt they were too long after having tried a shorter hire ski for a day last season...
My own skis were fast and stable but difficult to turn short radius and very difficult to handle in deep snow. The shorter ones were 165cm I think and much easier to turn but quite a bit slower on the flatter bits...
I guess it's a trade-off as to whether you want speed or agility, and since I'm getting on a bit I decided that slowing down would be no bad thing...
I'm 174cm tall, 73kg, not particularly fit and not a particularly good skier (after 30+ weeks!). Sorry to hijack the thread but would be grateful of any suggestions (it's not really a thread hijack when it's on topic is it...?)

speed = longer skis
sharp, crisp turns = shorter skis
everyone knows that, just a reminder
and you can always ski shorter skis

sounds like a pretty common prob here but you shouldnt confuse length with stiffness (as mrs doc keep telling me), a longer, softer and wider ski will be easier to ski in pow than a shorter, stiffer and thinner piste ski! often enough it the stiffness of a ski that catches people out in variable terrain, maybe not the length. nina (mrs d) is around the 5foot 1 mark and 49kg, she will be on a pair of 169's (112mm under foot) for pow and 166's (89mm)for park next season, now this is no great example as to be honest she absolutely rips varied terrain so fast there's few guys who can keep up with her but the reasons are still there!! as pp says try before buying but dont be too scared of going a wee bit longer if its the right set-up and take the flex of a ski just as serious as the length,

TBH, I don't think I'd buy again. At present I don't get to use skis often enough to justify the outlay so renting suits me better. Just wondering what length to start off with when I go. I realise I can change if not suitable...
