Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi j,

It's quite good value in Austria, particularly away from the cities and larger resorts, they haven't experienced the same property boom/bust as other countries, check out this website, in German though:

http://www.immodirekt.at/

Check out the provinces of Styria(Steiermark) & Carinthia(Karnten) for some bargains.

PS: Can I come and stay once you've found what you want? Laughing

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Howabout the 'chalets and appartments section' of a place called snowheads wink

Lots of posting from lots of people who have done just what you suggest, although most people buying at echange rates that are more favourable than currently!

j, Have looked at this fairly seriously myself - Austria being my goal. Essentially it is fairly restricted to foreigners in both countries. My neighbour bought a place in Saas Fee a couple of years ago and it was the local mayor who decided if his application was to be sucessful or not. In Switzerland the local cantons have various rules on foreigners buying and you'll probably find that only a percentage is allowed. In Austria, the further west the more difficult it becomes. Salzburgerland seems easier than Tyrol for example. You'll also find with various Austrian properties (particularly in Tyrol) that you must make the property available for rental or must be your main residence - it cant be a holiday home for example.
Here are some websites that I've found useful
http://www.propertiesinaustria.com/
http://www.euroburolimited.co.uk/
http://www.remax.at/ also good for property in Switzerland by going to Swiss site
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/overseas/search/austria

Personally I would avoid the new build market as it seems very expensive by comparison. You can coma accross some chalets that are sub divided into self contained apartments for example that are cheaper than one new build appartment. Also, decide where you want to buy and contact local estate agents.

Good luck with your search
