what's happened to the old £5 travel irons without steam that were perfect for waxing.. they seem to all have been replaced by £10 travel irons with steam holes..
Anyone got a source of decent cheap wax-suitable irons, fleabay doesn't seem to be much better unless you want to pay £10 for something made in the 60s...

bertie bassett, actually it did seem to work fine depite the lumps! We replaced it because we were worried that there might be a sudden catastrophic loss of the base.

Mine has got steam holes. I've just studiously ignored them.

Nick L, sorry mate but I laughed out loud when I clicked on your photo. Might print it off and put it over my work bench as an aid to concentration. Just what was the reaction of Mrs L?

Am I missing something here, I just use an old steam iron (obviously without any water in it ) Ground the Teflon plate off with a belt sander, work's a treat. Too big to take on hols but I just supplement a well waxed base with Notwax.

I use my wife's encaustic art iron.
It is designed for melting wax, even if a slightly different compound to what we use on skis.
She isn't too keen on the fact that the ski edges tend to scratch te base of the iron a little though '

You are supposed to melt the wax onto the ski, not vice versa.
