Ok just imagine that I have just landed from the moon and know nothing about video cameras.....
I just saw this advertised and wondered what people in the know think of this package...
http://www.4kam.com/helmet_camera_snow_package.htm
How much video would I be able to record on this before dumping it down to my laptop ?
What would the video quality be like ?
I would use it for filming friends and family and not for commercial gain.

According to the page, 5 hours. It'll be rubbish, though.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm not sure it will be rubbish. I have a similar bulletcam and for its size it produces pretty good picture quality, certainly good enough for holiday videos. I connect my bulletcam to a camcorder so it records at a slightly higher resolution than the 640x480 HQ setting on the solid state recorder that is quoted in this package, but 640x480 is good enough to show on a TV or burn to a DVD (might need some video conversion) and more than good enough for posting videos on YouTube and the like.

640 x 480 at 30fps isn't what I would call "rubbish". OK, it isn't HD, but it is plenty good enough for most purposes.
And the "5 hours" is what it quotes you as getting on a 2Gb memory card (although that would be at the lower "web" resolution).
Even without any additional memory cards, you can record 6 hours at the above resolution (1.5 hours per GB, 4Gb built in to the recorder).

I've recently bought a Oregon Scinetific 'action cam' especially for when i go snowboarding in Jan & Feb (and when out on me bike too ) - and not as expensive as the 4kam product either. I'd looked at both but for the dif in price i thought worth a punt - tried it out here and there and not bad recording. I'm still playing with it and trying all the different settings..... will advise when i know more!!!

bertie bassett, that clip is pretty representative of my mates vids taken on a Samsung Miniket.
I think the funny angle could be compensated for by setting the camera position up on the helmet.
It still nice to see this type of stuff when you're in the bar at the end of the day - especially if one of your mates stacks it just in front of the cameraman.

You have to get into the mindset "film with the head, look with the eyes" or else you do get a lot of bouncy video. My best success so far in that respect has been using my mobile phone handheld, it makes the skiing a little trickier but produces better footage.

I was kind of envisaging that a martin bell type approach with a standalone camera - sanyo xacti or similar might be more effective, clearly noway near as fast or as talented...

I thought I replied to this ...
The image dimension and frame rate is a small part of what makes good video. Colour reproduction and capture resolution are more important.
