Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Head Cams

Ok just imagine that I have just landed from the moon and know nothing about video cameras.....

I just saw this advertised and wondered what people in the know think of this package...

http://www.4kam.com/helmet_camera_snow_package.htm

How much video would I be able to record on this before dumping it down to my laptop ?

What would the video quality be like ?

I would use it for filming friends and family and not for commercial gain.

According to the page, 5 hours. It'll be rubbish, though.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm not sure it will be rubbish. I have a similar bulletcam and for its size it produces pretty good picture quality, certainly good enough for holiday videos. I connect my bulletcam to a camcorder so it records at a slightly higher resolution than the 640x480 HQ setting on the solid state recorder that is quoted in this package, but 640x480 is good enough to show on a TV or burn to a DVD (might need some video conversion) and more than good enough for posting videos on YouTube and the like.

What about this product from Archos?

http://www.archos.com/products/imt/archos_5/accessories.html?country=global&lang=en&p=helmet

That well known jungle site sells the webcam add-on for £83 and a 60GB Archos player for £250. The smaller capacity and less expensive Archos players might also be webcam compatible.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

640 x 480 at 30fps isn't what I would call "rubbish". OK, it isn't HD, but it is plenty good enough for most purposes.

And the "5 hours" is what it quotes you as getting on a 2Gb memory card (although that would be at the lower "web" resolution).

Even without any additional memory cards, you can record 6 hours at the above resolution (1.5 hours per GB, 4Gb built in to the recorder).

I've recently bought a Oregon Scinetific 'action cam' especially for when i go snowboarding in Jan & Feb (and when out on me bike too Laughing ) - and not as expensive as the 4kam product either. I'd looked at both but for the dif in price i thought worth a punt - tried it out here and there and not bad recording. I'm still playing with it and trying all the different settings..... will advise when i know more!!!

As a standalone unit this one is getting a good write up on the windsurf sites - http://www.2xs.co.uk/GoPro_HERO_5_Wide.asp?CID=0
It's a wider angle lens so better for the POV shots, and obviously creates less of seasickness effect as less zoomed.

The vholdr - http://www.vholdr.com/ is an all in one device that seems popular with the bike brigade - available here for 279 - http://www.actioncameras.co.uk/VholdR_Action_Cam.html?gclid=CI6py7jvl5cCFQ4i3god6j6pDA

As a boarder though I just think there's going to be too much head-turning on the video for the bullet cams to work that well - thoughts/comments.

I've tried watching the run dwon from Avoriaz to prodains here - http://uk.youtube.com/v/IVbrasdfciQ but give up before I finish as the image bounced around so much.

I guess the helmet cams aren't much use if you want to video your mates flying off kickers?

bertie bassett, that clip is pretty representative of my mates vids taken on a Samsung Miniket.
I think the funny angle could be compensated for by setting the camera position up on the helmet.
It still nice to see this type of stuff when you're in the bar at the end of the day - especially if one of your mates stacks it just in front of the cameraman.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

You have to get into the mindset "film with the head, look with the eyes" or else you do get a lot of bouncy video. My best success so far in that respect has been using my mobile phone handheld, it makes the skiing a little trickier but produces better footage.

I was kind of envisaging that a martin bell type approach with a standalone camera - sanyo xacti or similar might be more effective, clearly noway near as fast or as talented...

I thought I replied to this ...

The image dimension and frame rate is a small part of what makes good video. Colour reproduction and capture resolution are more important.
