Poster: A snowHead
|
I'm bumming round the alps for a few weeks between mid Jan and mid March this winter, and would really like to take in La Grave at some point. Sadly, my usual wingman for the steep and gnarly is out of action, recovering from surgery to his ACL.
I'd like to know (please), if there is much of a 'scene' there, where it would be possible to find people to ride with once in resort (I'm more than willing to split the cost of a guide), or if anyone has any trips planned where an extra body could be of use to you?
There seem to be plenty of bunkhouses in the village, probably from the number of climbers who frequent the area, so I'm not too worried about accommodation. Should I be?

Sammy5, Hi Sammy, I skied with http://www.snowlegend.com/. They put together groups of a max of 6 with a guide. I had a fantastic experience and recommend them highly. Everybody meets in the hotel opposite the lift after skiing so that's the best place to check into the scene. Just forget not to shave or wash for a few days before going and you'll fit in fine.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Sammy5, LG is likely to be better later rather than earlier as it does need a lot of snow to cover the rocks and boulders. It would be best to reserve your bunk - there are only 3,500 in total, so around March time it can be full. There's a really good feel in the village and the Bureau des Guides will organise groups which you should be able to join in. You will never regret going there.

Sammy5, if you ski good you'll have no worries picking up buddies. Very small scene, but therefore very tight. I have a good friend there, PM me.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks for the tips; sounds promising!
Steve - my 'mountain fuzz' will be in full effect by the time I get there; I'll blend in at a folk festival...

Steve Sparks,
The Snowlegend website looks fantastic!
I'd love to ski La Grave and although I like to ski steep stuff the statement that "this is not extreme skiing but you are not allowed to fall" does put the 5hits up me somewhat!
Is there any skiing there that does not involve a death risk? (Serious question, by the way - given the above statement).

Bergmeister, There are quite a few routes that are not much above a resort red in technical ability. The main Vallons being one of them.
