Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Plake, That restaurant is one of the hidden gems of the 3V's and is rammed in the summer with all the walkers. Never stopped in Winter, does he give you a little cake with your beer in the winter time?

Hi guys quick question ... I'm going to Courchevel 1650 on Saturday and i cant really find any good info about conditions there. snow-forecast.com is random every day weather is different and metofrance is showing something else. Is the snow good or is it very wet ? piste, off piste ... doesn't matter. Cheers

stoprocent, The last few days have been very warm - 17 degrees on Saturday in Meribel - and much of the offpiste is very heavy. However, the pistes are still in very good shape at the moment, and La Masse (at Les Menuires) had excellent snow yesterday, although it is getting slushy in the afternoons on the lower runs.

stoprocent,
Was in 1850 last week and we got over two foot of snow I would say, even on piste it was over the top of the boot stuff. Hope it's lasting for you!

Spring conditions continue, with high temperatures during the day, blue skies and almost no wind. Haven't spent much time on piste, but they seem to be holding up very well. Higher slopes are better in the afternoon as they are less soft than lower slopes.

Yesterday was a tough day for me. Lots of boot-packing and skinning (about 700m vertical to Petit Mt Blanc, which was hard work for an unfit guy like me Embarassed ), plus a walk out then an uphill skate along a XC track. We were rewarded with some lovely powder on north facing slopes, but rather too much sticky gloop to make the uphill effort seem worthwhile.

Today was interesting, digging snow pits and doing rutch block tests to look at snowpack stability, plus more transceiver practice, navigation work and group leadership drills. All very enjoyable (and not much walking uphill Smile )

Discovered yesterday that fellow snowHead MissRibena is staying in the same accommodation as me. It's a small world...

Great conditions on the pistes in Courch today. M was as good as I've ever skied it (powder excepted), perfect cold, firm snow...
Sunny sides definitely transforming, but get the timing right and there's some nice spring snow to be had... + its very, very quiet.

Bit of snow due Tuesday which should make things even better Very Happy

Got back from Meribel yesterday and snow was in good condition, although getting a bit slushy in places. Had a great week. It was really quiet, not been that week in March before to compare but it did seem very, very quiet.

Great conditions in Courchevel today, with surprisingly light powder in the couloirs.. Managed to get first tracks in the main rocher de l'ombre bowl which was very pleasant.
Snow still good low down - Jockeys, Murettes & Jean Blanc were all in excellent conditions this morning, still possible to ski to Bozel, with skis off for one 20m section just below St Bon, skied great powder down to St Bon yesterday afternoon while it was still storming up high - barely a ski track in sight..

So all in all, about as good as it gets with easter hols rapidly approaching..!

Well spring has well and truly sprung back in the 3 Valleys!
Today we headed higher up in Mottaret and skied reasonable old powder under Plattieres 3 cables, in the Becca Couloir, and in K2 couloir off Mt Vallon. Sunny slopes starting to 'spring up', giving some nice skiing where they haven't been too cut up - but timing a bit tricky with the sun playing hide & seek with the clouds..

Adrian at the entry to K2:

Back over to Courch on the way home was a slush-fest, though not too bad on the whole...evidence of the heat in the sun in this big 'creep crack' below Roc Mugnier:

In summary: high & North-facing is good, anything else needs good timing to catch the spring snow as it 'turns'..

Maybe I'm weird, but if it's warm and the off piste is sketchy mid fat skis and slush on piste seem fun to me, esp slushy moguls Smile

Great snow under the Caron cables today and top of Lac du Lou from Caron (fresh tracks all the way to the big flat..) but very sticky in places lower down...

kitenski, Plenty of slush bumps around at the moment..!!! Happy days - reminds me of spring in Scotland on the Goose or the Lady...

Just returned from La Tania. Some OK snow higher up and on north facing slopes but very slushy and heavy on the lower pistes. Top of La Masse, Cime de Caron and Mt Vallon very good still. Skied the Grande Couloir, Couloir de Curet on Wednesday pm top of both was fine but bottom big slushy bumps. Only the blue down to La Tania remains open.

Still lots of fun to be had though.

All runs into Meribel remain open, although getting very heavy. There was a dusting of new snow above about 2500m last night, and we even found a little powder on the Mont Vallon this morning.

Saturday \Sunday April 11th - 12th - Val Thorens
For those that like 'spring ski-ing' you wont be disapointed.
All VT slopes and lifts operational! Very Happy
Today, sunny and a little cloud.
Winds light to 'capable of lofting' a minimum.
Suncream advised, comfortably red on factor 40! Even short exposure can have an effect!
Snow starts heavy and gets heavier. Late afternoon (spring conditions) experienced at 9:00 am.
Full range of snow conditions available (except powder) providing you start above 3000m! Megamum wasnt disapointed as the rock hard corduroy is still available.
It will need a lot more snow and lower temps to improve things.
Large numbers on slopes and lifts queues huge at key times, it is the 2nd easter week after all.

Patch, Seconded - definitely some great slush-bump skiing to be had lower down!! But some nice patches of soft stuff off Mt Vallon, good spring in the Becca Couloir, and larger sections of softness off the Glacier chair & dropping back into Mottaret from 3V2...

Much softness...location secret...:

Slopes holding up reasonably well as long as you don;t go low...
Monday was v.warm and by tuesday even the highest north-facing stuff around val T & orelle had compacted and was definitely not fluffy any more...

Good spring snow to be skied tho' where it hasn't been cut up by people skiing it too late in the day. Nice smooth stuff in Les Avals today (+ a great omelette courtesy of Laurent at the Grand Plan...).

Lots of Foehn blowing, even a few flakes this afternoon, but nothing major..

Which way in did you take? We went into the Lou from the Masse side last week and found lovely slush but it certainly wasn't untracked - there were constant trails of ESF with snakes of 8yr old kids etc! Am very jealous now back at work Evil or Very Mad

Still finding fresh tracks within minutes of lifts over at Courchevel 1600 today, very quiet everywhere....

The slush lower down has now turned more sugary with the colder temps, and some of the brown bits on piste have been covered up!

Cheers,

Greg

masmith, we went down Indiens yesterday morning, was hard pack, but slushy into 1650. Hope you have been now though as the Big Chief 'Loup Gris' was packing up until next year! He was a nice guy and my 4 year old loved the archery. A highly recommended outing for those with kids.
I second kitenski the snow in 1650 was great yesterday snowHead Sadly I am now back home Sad
