Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Resorts in early April...

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Looking for a holiday on the cheap in early April (~4th), and am thinking of booking something with Snowtrex. The only worry I have is snow conditions. Soo, out of the places listed below, what are peoples thoughts on what they'll probably be like by that time in the season:

Chamrousse
SuperDévoluy / La Joue du Loup
Val Cenis
Valmeinier

I've discounted the other resorts as they look very limited skiing-wise.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/previous experiences/etc Smile

Snow depth in cm on upper and then/lower slopes for that week in cm:

Chamrousse: Average for last 15 years: 97 / 56. . last season: 198 / 133. . season before last 92 / 44.
Val Cenis : Average: 145 / 22 . . last season: 206 / 20. . season before last: 151 / 25 (but most of the skiing is higher and remember snow from snow cannons is not included in this).

Haven't heard of the other two and cannot find figures. However, except for very low resorts you should normally be fine in early April (but remember further East in Europe you find the snow lower).
Highest snow depths are usually in the second half of March but last year were in early April in some places.

Aha, thank you snowball! I had a look on the SCGB website, but being a non-member I can only get last year's (which may have been a total fluke of a season).

Merci Smile

Val Cenis probably the best choice because lots of north facing runs and relative high altitude of the skiing area (up to 2800).

Chamrousse: 1420 m - 2250 m, 92 km piste, 46 runs.

Superdevoluy/La Joue du Loup: 1500m - 2510m, 100 km piste, 61 runs.

Valcenis: 1400m - 2800m, 80 km piste, 43 runs.

Valmeinier: 1500m - 2600m, 150 km piste, 83 runs.

Chamrousee and Superdevoluy might be very French as their websites don't seem to have any English version.

mark_s, last year it was very snowy at the end of the season - may not be too representative of the average year. Unless you have a particular reason to book now, and with that operator, why not wait? There's not likely to be a big shortage of ski holidays for sale this coming season, given the gloomy economic outlook.

mark_s, Was in Chamrousse from 12th April this year and we had great conditions. Kept pretty cold and we must have had a couple of feet of fresh snow over the week. Not sure how indicitive of usual conditions this is, but we certainly got lucky. I'm not sure I would risk booking that late again, but will be keping an eye open and maybe looking to go on a last minute deal - conditions dependant of course.

pam w, just investigating options at the minute. I didn't think last-minute deals would get much cheaper than Snowtrex's current offerings though, hence why I'm looking into their destinations Smile

Thanks everyone snowHead
