Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

what skis to buy....

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Guys, I want to buy skis.. Before I was skiing only on piste.. now wanna try off-piste. What skis you would recommend that will be good for groomed and powder skiing? kinda all mountain skis. I can't decide because there are many skis that have waist like 70 and are called all mountain (for example Rossignol Bandit b1) but isn't 70 too little for skiing in powder? What about skis that are "backcountry freestyle " will they be good? (its unlikely that I will use them in the park). But I also wonder will for example 124-92-114, be good for skiing on piste?
I appreciate your help. thanks

124-92-114 would be fine for skiing on piste provided you're prepared to accept they won't compete with a 65mm waisted slalom ski and work a bit harder to hold an edge on glazed east coast hardpack (guessing from your location).

Every ski is a compromise though.

korok12, i'm also in a similar situation - i'd like to buy some skis for both piste and powder but not sure what to buy.

What is a good waist size for this sort of ski?

Cheers

Nope, but wider is generally easier. Also depends how heavy you are?
If you want them to be genuinely good on and off piste, then I would look at the 80-90 mm width range. There are dozens of good skis in this width range that are useful all-rounders.

korok12, welcome to snowHead ! (Are we having a bit of a recruitment drive going in Ontario?)

Where do you normally ski? Out east or do you head west for your snow. Or even over here in Europe?

I'd suggest that anything much over 80mm underfoot is of little use on firm/hardpack piste unless you're a very good skier that can create some big angles. You can get away with more in the west and less in the east.

and went skiing a lot in Eastern Europe.

now I have Rossignol World cup 9x .. they are like 101/65/91 but never tried them yet... bought a used pair at the end of winter, was stupid mistake but still would like to try them too.

maybe I should keep them and buy powder skis . Very Happy that would be a nice solution Very HappyD

what skis do u have?

what about park skis? they usually have 80mm waist. are they good for powder and piste?

The yellow ones? What colour is the plate? What bindings do you have on them?

Those are an -excellent- GS ski.

Keep them, especially if you have the yellow plates that look like a bridge with black inserts front and back that require FKS bindings. (I assume they have bindings on them?)

Yes, it would. If you weigh over 175lbs buying an "allmountain" ski that works well for both Ontario and Western CA is going to be harder and possibly even more expensive than finding a powder ski and keeping your 9Xs.

I find my 92 waisted skis MUCH more fun on piste than my 65 waisted ones.

Movement Gladiators vs Salomon Equipe SC.

Personally I think the Gladiators like the speed more.

I'm about to try Line Prophet 100s as a do-it-all type ski, but more powder biased. Already have a pair of Head IM82s and IM72s. Both are excellent piste skis (at least on soft pack) and the IM82s are strong off-piste too (183 cm long with 83 mm waist). But even the IM72s are fine in powder and I weigh 86 kg. All my skiing is out in BC Canada, so get to see plenty of snow. I rarely ski on icy hardpack, so I don't bother with more aggressive piste skis. But I've never felt the need to go for balls out powder skis either.

Yup the yellow ones. and plate is yellow too. Very Happy they are a 184 cm almost of my height, a little too long but I hope they will give me stability at high speed ( i really like going like a Be Nice please! rocket not doing too many turns but enough not to kill myself )
my weight is 74kg/ 163 pounds.
After I get my degree I will move to Vancouver for sure.

korok12, much as I do like Toronto, I have to admit I'd be moving to Vancouver too... wink

You should get away with that length for a GS-type ski. Having said that (and having a large pair of GS skis myself), I'd get rid of 'em and replace them with some slalom skis for Ontario... As that's probably not really an option, they're still definitely worth holding onto, I've always enjoyed skiing on Rossignols. Then just get a fatter pair for powder days. If you do that, you can get away with a slightly wider ski, as you'll still have another option for hard-pack days (nothing worse than trying to ski on sheet ice on 90mm+ skis).

They will do this thing. I assume you have the bindings to go with them; nothing else will fit those plates.

If you see a pair of 9S oversize they will be the exact complement for when you learn to turn... wink

you have off-piste in Ontario ?? Smile

in the end its up to , go out and demo, a few years ago I was skiing a 80mm and thought it was as fat as I would want on piste, but now I ski a 96mm on piste no problems (wouldn't say I am carving like a 80mm ski, but skiing fast and in control). The fatter the better for off, and the worse for on. so what can YOU handle ??

I find that in fatter skis, the stiffer they are the better for on-piste, but once again, that is just me.......
