Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Bone Spurs On Top Of Foot

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Wasn't exactly sure what forum to post this in.

These are 'bumps' that appear about halfway down the top of the foot and appear to be some sort of calcium growth. Wearing normal shoes isn't a problem, but technical sports footwear like ski boots and road cycling shoes are a different story as with these it's important to immobile the foot inside the boot / shoe. In terms of ski boots, by the end of the week I'm starting to have to take large doses of medication to deal with the pain. I've tried loosening the clips on the boots but my feet then flap about inside the boot which isn't too great.

Anyone else had / still have these ? Any tips or suggestions welcome. Is removal an option ? Incidentally I am going to a foot surgeon on Monday to do with an ankle related issue so might see if he's interested.

dsoutar, I have a similar issue...it got to the stage where I couldn't really ski all day as my boots would hurt too much. A trip to ProFeet for some insoles helped a lot.

If you haven't got custom insoles yet, then I'd definitely recommend getting some - it may even be worth completely replacing your boots (think this is what I need to do). I'm intending to visit CEM/SZK at some point this season to get my boots sorted out properly...but I'm sure one of them will turn up here to explain what's causing the spurs!

FWIW, I asked my GP about bone spurs, and she said that they could be corrected (removed), but that it was a painful operation and would mean several weeks off my feet recovering. Bottom line was that it wasn't worth the hassle unless they were causing you severe problems (which mine don't really). Would be interested to hear what your specialist has to say though!

dsoutar, I had one removed from the side of my right foot 3 1/2 weeks ago. SZK had ground out the shell on my boots but it was still getting worse.

I suspect that everyone reacts to surgery differently, I was advised to start taking painkillers as soon as I woke up from the operation but didn't need them and could walk about the house the next day.

Will keep you informed, Chris. I've already been to Profeet and had both boots stretched (for yet another unrelated problem). I also have collapsed arches, worse on one than the other. Maybe I should just ask the specialist to remove feet altogether and fit some sort of universal joint that would allow me to fit to skis, pedals shoes etc. Maybe I could get castors fitted wink

Of course I was referring to general use. Coming down stairs with castors would be rather tricky and coming down stairs with skis would be downright interesting ! (Depending on what was beyond the bottom of the stairs).

1 support foot on a well made footbed , minimizing any forefoot varus correction unless a fixed deformity is present as raising the first ray can aggrovate the area
2 stretch or grind shell /liner of boot to accomodate said metatarsal-cunieform exostosis
3 possibly lower foot in boot by grinding zeppa [this will increase the overall volume so is not always an option]
4 avoid surgery until after last ski trip of the year...if you must
