Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Gloves or Mittens

I discovered in the pocket of my coat two weekends ago, whilst out in the country in truly foul weather, and not moving very much, my Dachstein Mitts. I must have had them 20 years, since school, but they did the trick just as well as always.

Made me think about skiing hand-wear. They're obviously no good, as the abrasion of the poles would make water come through - though I don't recall that having been a problem when using an iceaxe - so perhaps they would work.

Ski gloves seem to be gloves... mitts are always far warmer as your fingers gain heat from each other. What do others wear and why?

(I was looking idly at some £80... £80!!! Mountain equipment gloves which had inner gloves and outer mitts; wow!)

James the Last, I particularly used to like the way they smelled of wet dog. Laughing

i always thought that it didn't matter if dachstein mitts got wet because wetness does not affect their thermal properties (what with their being wool)

i used to ski in something similar but gloves rather than mitts. very comfy but used to get ripped to shreds by sharp ski edges

Arno, true. They were always warm regardless of how wet they got.

James the Last, I, too, have a pair of 20-year-old Dachstein mitts and they still keep me warm on the hills. When I had rather less disposable income than I now have, I used to use them for skiing, too, and I have no memory of cold fingers regardless of the inclemency of the weather.

I've found it impossible to buy a pair of snowboard mitts where the inners are also mitts too. Last pair I found were Patagonia ones at....£80. Keep sewing them up as they have a seam across the hand where I clip up my bindings - they are mountaineering gloves not snowboard ones.

James the Last, I've got some rip curl mits, with fingers inside, if that makes sense. They look GRRREATT. However, I prefer gloves as mits are too much pfaff when you are doing your pfaffing - no fingers...no good Sad I am also lucky in that my hands don't ever get cold, so I wear the thinnest cheapest thinsulate stuff off the market, as if you lose a 2.99 glove it's not so bad snowHead Otherwise my gloves smell of wet Lizzard, sorry, dog... Arno, quite right, commonly used by winter mountaineers to replace whatever soaking wet and freezing cold gortex technical gloves they wore while climbing.

Mitts are good if you have broken digits. (personal experiance here folks).
But in general i prefer wearing a glove.
You don't need to take them off to adjust stuff.

Me too, for the same reason, though I accept they may not be as warm.

Gloves unless you suffer from cold hands... and even then I would say a half mitt instead of a full mitt.

I have the problem that my hands overheat if I wear ski gloves, so I wear a £5.99 pair of decathlon mountain biking gloves. They're just about to go into their 5th season!

I'm sure I've seen glove/mitts for sale which have fingers and then have a like a mitten top which can pull over the fingers for extra warmth, has anyone else seen them? They might be a good compromise for folks wanting the best of both worlds

I use only mittens. Seriously gloves do not keep my fingers warm at all. I have long thin fingers and bad circulation. Sometimes I wear liner gloves underneath the mittens. I have converted my OH too and he wears mitt too.

We are in Alberta and so it can be fairly cold, but even in Europe I have skied in mittens since I was old enough to pay for my own equipment. I remember as an early teen just having such freezing hands, and french instructors hitting my fingers.
