Just finished putting the final touches to the shop. All great products i hope. But it has to be said, at least through my eyes. It all looks really awful. Horrid graphics and they all really clash. The boots are the least daring range of designs i've seen for years and look, well dull. Perhaps we could have picked a better range, but technically we have as always, 'Cherry Picked', seems the good looking stuff is poor quality. I'll put my rose coloured specks on tomorrow and we'll reassess.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, this thread is useless without photos. Or at least a list of what made the 'cool wall'.

comprex, We do have them, it has to be said.
jbob, Of the 40 or so models available worldwide i would go as far to say we have the biggest range worldwide. MAYBE??????
BD, Scarpa, Dynafit, Garmont. 23 models, the others are just poor quality versions of the same thing.

Also waiting for the photos, and specially waiting for comments about "the biggest offer available worlwide" of touring boots because I want ones but waiting for new products (freeride oriented boots) reviews....
Maybe in late January I'll be visiting you... (every year we'll do some days at cham-verbier, so worth it)

How to touring boots differ from normal boots? Are they essential or could you do a week in the backcountry with normal boots? (Technica Vento 8's for example)

PowderHunter, a week of touring in Vento 8s = nasty feet. And possible death.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

PowderHunter, TBH buddy i don't do the Vento. That said if i remember right it has either a walk mode or a stiffner switch. There are way worse boots you could propose for rando, they are light too.

PowderHunter, one problem with "normal" boots is having no grip when scrambling up rocky/icy bits. Even though I only do "day" tours that finally convinced me that touring boots were essential.

You know it makes sense.

Okay, enough of the criticism of the boots. Thanks for the advice though, it's interesting to know. I wouldn't have thought about the walking aspect or grip, I just assumed that most of it was done on skins. If I were to have a week of backcountry, does anyone have a definitive list of what is required to do this safely an successfully? Also, just out of interest, how does backcountry gear change for snowboarders?

PowderHunter,
Not so...the one defining thing that made me go AT ( Endo's ) was a boot pack over rocks and even on the snow....different league in confidence.
Having said that, the Zoo made me a much much better fit as well....

Nothing wrong with that assumption except that it stops too short. In order to actually glide one skin forward any appreciable distance while still standing on the other one rather needs ankle motion. Hence, walk switch in 'walk' mode when skinning.

Get snowshoes (which means skiers will, sometimes quite pointedly, demand you take a different line and stop post holing their tracks), get approach skis or get a split board.

PowderHunter, if you're after a split board then contact kiwi1 as he has an ex-demo split board for sale at a bargain price.

While your all talking touring boots........ I'm doing a week tour late season (Haute Route) and was thinking of getting my own boots rather than renting. Can touring boots be used ok for piste stuff without too many probs ?

mistermouse, yes, although it depends on the boot and the skier. there is a very big range of performance in terms of uphill and downhill
