Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just about the time of year for anxious snow watchers to start divining among the wigglies. wink

This year snowHead s has decided to offer a premium subscription service, so there'll be a private area of the forum and for a one off £20 you'll get all the pointless weather speculation you can handle for the resort of your choice.

We haven't quite figured out the payment details or how we divide it up, maybe a tenner to admin and a pearl diver each for me and carled.

Sound fair ?

So Brian - if I really wanted to ski somewhere in Europe this weekend, where would you tell me to go?

Currently edging towards Saas Fee or Zermatt, but just heard that Verbier opens this weekend (Lac des Vaux only). The Pyrenees look good but too far to drive there from Brussels.

Have I missed anything?

(If I go where you recommend and there's ok snow, you've got a sixer of Belgian beer put aside - how's that for an incentive?)

Saw this mentioned on another thread as the ensembles I used last year dont seem to be updating:

Just copy this into the address bar (I use Google Earth top get the Lat and Long) change the "46" and "6.41" to your resort of choice.

I think this is Flaine but may be giving the weather for Fisher Bank!

Alternatively go here and point but I found this a bit hit and miss!

Welcome back - best thread on the whole site - If you charged just 10p for every time I look on here through the winter - you would be talking early retirement. Smile Keep the info coming, and ignore the doubters who are just not worthy.

I loved this thread last season welcome back! Shall we have a sweepstake on the page number for:
- the first mention of snow "vanishing" on metcheck
- the first request for snow fall predictions 1 month in advance
- the first snowhead to feel carled's wrath
- first snowhead to defend honour of above

All seemed rather common in last year's thread Happy

horizon, so to answer your question (belatedly but for free wink ), and I can't believe I'm writing this but Zinal opens for weekends from 15/11 if you're looking for somewhere quiet with great off-piste.

Only the access cable car plus the 2 chairs will be running but that's about 700m vertical and it currently looks like this:

I'm a reformed character. (Didn't I say that last year?) and shall not smite the unworthy. I'm a part-time buddhist now and all is peace and karma.

Stands back smugly, chalking up first strike of 08/09. wink

High pressure looks to be taking control over the weekend and most of next week.

Signs are fairly promising for a really cold arctic blast around the 20th/21st, watch this space.

How do you work out where the fronts are likely to be on a chart like that?
snow report
 brian
brian
Guest
rob@rar, with considerably more expertise than I have !

... but here's a stab. You're looking for the isobars all abruptly changing direction in parallel (sometimes it's quite subtle) and of course fronts occur on boundaries of cold and warm air masses so it's a bit more obvious on an 850hPa temperature chart like that one. Spotting them on the 500s is obviously harder.

red is warm front, blue is cold. They should actually maybe be a little bit closer near Iceland, possibly occluding slightly, but my mouse wasn't very steady.
