Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

And it was one for the ages.

Not a bad turn to be had on the mountain, well the Grand Hirafu areas anyhow.

Skied with Jag and Scout again today. The last time this winter. And what a day to go out on.

Deep, light, consistent. Not too many people out.

Snowed most of the day, but the 30 mins or so of sunshine this afternoon when we were doing laps in waterfall were superb.

Not as deep as in previous days, but very, very enjoyable powder both in and out of the resort.

Spent the first two hours teaching and skiing freshly fallen and blown in boot top powder around Ace #3 chair and in Rinkan with Tracy and Filip.

And then Emilia, Tracy, Filip, Mark and I did three laps through Gate 4 above Hanazono.

Glorious sunshine, fast traverse track to get to the goods, nobody in our sights, and fast, light boot to knee deep pow. Sure it was tracked but there were plenty of islands of fresh and the chopped felt like untouched.

Grand Hirafu, Niseko Resort Area

7cm in the past 24 hrs at MQ

I was woken at 4am with the sound of rain lashing against the roof and the glacial creak of the snow calving off the roof of the cabin.

With nowhere to go it filled half the path from yesterday's pic Sad

90 minutes later and the path restored to its full glory, the rain started again.

What driving rain does to snow

No turns for me today - discretion is the better part of valour - but Greg (he of 'Big Wednesday' fame) said the groomers were soft and in good shape but the off-groomed was sticky and heavy.

It will be interesting to see how this rain event affects the snowpack.

Wind has been gusting most of the day, and as I write it's become cooler with 'real' flakes falling gently from the sky.

Hopefully this will be a minor blip in the powder proceedings, as the other rain events have been.

For those looking to arrive in the next week things should be back to normal pretty quickly.

But a whole load of rain Sad

Rain started in around 1am and with minor breaks has pretty much continued. The snowpack around MQ has diminished rapidly with the rain and warmer temps. But I can actually see out of my windows now. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Roads are like a skating rink.

And presumably so too the lower mountain. No interest in venturing up there to find out for myself.

The rain has been accompanied by strong, gusting winds and at 10:50am only the lower lifts are open.

But the cavalry is on its way.

The rain is forecast to turn to snow this afternoon and continue through to Monday afternoon. Snowforecast is calling for 35cm of snow accompanied by cold temps. Down to -20 C in the village on Monday night.

Having endured too many rain events already this winter I'm confident that this one will be forgotten about by Monday.

The rain finally stopped and light snow started falling around 7pm last night in the village.

This morning brought superlight powder at MQ courtesy of the frigid overnight temps. But lurking below the fluff was the boilerplate layer of frozen rain and ice.

Compadres on the hill this morning report dust on crust, boilerplate, and dense drifts up to 50cm.

Snowing heavily as I write (10am) and it looks like the harder layer in-bounds will be covered up pretty quickly.

The Niseko Avalanche Information web site is reporting the avalanche risk as HIGH.

Colder temps than the previous couple of days, between -7 and - 13 C.

The lower angle slopes had a soft 10cm coverage above the frozen rain crust which made for fast and enjoyable turns in the birch forests. The shadows on the snow were mesmerising.

On steeper slopes the new snow was sloughing off leaving a scratchy surface.

Either there was more rain here, or Rusutsu has has much less snow than the Niseko Resort Area, or both because there was plenty of sasa showing through.

Won't take much for it to be on though Smile

Was due to head back to Hirafu last night but I was having such a great time in Rusutsu and at Hotel Romulus I decided to extend my 'holiday'.

With no lessons planned and a day to myself I set the alarm for a dawn ascent of Shiribetsu-dake, the very aesthetic peak to the right of West Mt (please see the panorama from yesterday).

Set off in darkness at 4:45. Took an hour to bootpack to the top of 'Elite' on West Mt and from there it took another hour along the ridge to the summit of Shiribetsu-dake.

The walking was easy with the ridge line scoured and sun baked.

Caught up with 4 Japanese skiers and boarders on the ridge who'd snowshoed and skinned up below the south facing bowl.

The previous 5 days of sunshine had baked the slopes leaving a solid and fast descent.

Dropped down to the road, across the fields and clicked out at the front steps of Romulus for a well earned Japanese style breakfast. Gorgeous and just what the doctor ordered.

Disappointed that I didn't get the fresh snow and sunrise of yesterday, but very happy to have finally skied the face that dominates the skyline above Rusutsu.

With the snow getting heavier yesterday afternoon and relatively little falling overnight we - Jeremy, Jack, Andy & I - decided to take a trip to Kiroro Snow World for the day.

We left under blue skies but only got about 15 mins past Kutchan before the heavens opened and powder started tumbling out of the sky.

By the time we got to Kiroro 10cm had already accumulated.

Went up the gondola for one run and then headed over to the Nagamine area. And stayed there all day.

Over the day at least 30cm fell and we skied untracked run after run.

On the Road Again

Left a greybird Hirafu at 8 headed for Tomamu.

But on the way Ian Stutchbury and I took a detour to the former coal mining powerhouse of Yubari, home to Mt Racey Ski Resort.

The bankrupt town may have seen better days, but the resort was jumping with large groups of schoolchildren and the army learning to ski.

The hotel was a little behind the times with the latest movie releases, not that Sean Connery would mind

Ian and I were the only non-Japanese in attendance and the only ones hitting the steeper treed areas of the hill.

The south facing slopes were baked and hard packed with a covering of chalky snow. The north facing slopes off Mt Reisui, of which there are many, were soft, untracked and exciting.

Really enjoyed the day and the legitimate steeps and will definitely return to hit terrain like this in fresh snow.

Valentine's Day at Tomamu

Arrived after dark Friday night for 3 nights and 3 days skiing at Tomamu.

It was snowing heavily on our arrival, but the snow was blowing horizontal.

Had an excellent buffet dinner and Japanese buffet breakfast before suiting and booting and heading out to the slopes.

Took about 4 steps, turned around and shut it down. The snow had turned to rain and Tomamu was giving us no love.

Spent the day reading, watching movies, eating, drinking coffee and waiting. And hoping.

To no avail.

Early night and then up at 11:30 pm to watch France beat Scotland and Wales beat England in the 6N rugby.

5cm of new on top of 15cm of day old on top of a hard rain + sun crust hybrid. Not pretty.

The terrain at Tomamu is impressive. 30 to 35 degree pitches through old growth coniferous forests. We're talking big gaps between the bark. And no one in there.

We just didn't get the snow to enjoy it.

Winter has returned, just not at Tomamu. We came to ski pow and there was none, so time to move on.

With no bar, great buffets, the feeling that the resort is in its death throes, great terrain but lifts accessing it permanently shut, Tomamu was a mixed bag. I would return but only if I knew there was at least 30cm of fresh on a soft base. Pretty much in the "most of Europe" category then Wink

Thanks to the wonder that is the internet, and 30 minutes trawling through the snow forecast site we made the decision to head back from whence we came instead of heading north to Asahidake.

First stop, Mt Racey in Yubari. It was in the centre of the doughnut too. So a quick coffee and back on the road.

we'd called back to base all morning, but with the majority of the lifts in Niseko on wind hold we had no desire to rush back.

The decision was made to head to Sapporo Kokusai on the way to suck it and see.

We saw it and it did not suck.

Sunday 22 February 2009
Grand Hirafu, Niseko Resort Area

24cm in the past 24 hrs at MQ.

Poor visibility and high winds up high kept the gates shut all day, but lower down it was deep.

Spent most of the day at a seminar in Hanazono discussing backcountry access from Niseko United, and how to improve avalanche awareness and education.

Very informative presentations from guests Tim Petrick of K2 and Seattle based Swiss Mountain Guide Martin Volken. And some lively discussions.
