Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

BASI Off Piste Mountain Safety - insurance

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi

Just found this forum - looks good.

Has anyone any tips (who to use and who not to use) for insurance for the BASI off piste mountain safety. Well outside the resort area so my normal insurnace (dog tag) won't cover I think, so is BMC the only good option.

Welcome to snowHeads Wayne.

I did that course last season and just used my DogTag insurance. You want to double check, but it covers off-piste skiing with a guide and, as you're accompanied by guides the whole time, then you should be covered. Nothing on the (ISIA) course involves ropes, so you don't cross over into "ski mountaineering".

Saying that, the BMC insurance really is the dog's doobries.

You could also consider getting a Carte Neige.

Wayne, welcome to snowHeads Smile That's a good point. I'm planninng to do that course in March and will double check my insurance (Direct Travel). From what I can remember off-piste was allowed provided it was within the relevant guideline of the resort (eg if the resort specifies you must ski with a guide, you will only be covered if you ski with a guide). As PhillipStanton said, I think you are always accompanied on the Mountain Safety course.

Wayne, I've used Dogtag and I think it does cover - yes you will be outside resort area, but you will be with a mountain guide. I had Dogtag at the time i did this course i think.

You could also try Direct Travel. BMC is expensive i think?

Thanks for all the tips

I'll look into it more tommorrow. Got Zermat end of Nov so I had better my act together. Normally just take out for season cover with dog tag for work so will call dog tag and see what they say about Zermat.

Not heard of Snowcards before so will look at them and see what they say as well.

Not sure why dog tag is not on basi website links any more. They used to give a basi discount. Hope they still do

Cheers all

rob@rar, Wayne, i did it on direct travel plus carte neige. Called direct travel and spoke to a specialist and he said yes professional courses two weeks or under on or off piste were covered within resort boundary...

skimottaret, thanks for that, I'll also supplement the Direct Travel policy with Carte Neige.

Just a warning that, in Zermatt at least, they may take you outside of the resort boundary. Waaaaaaay outside the resort boundary on the day tour.

Wayne, BASI offer insurance for their courses. I don't have any information about the cover or value for money though. I have found Snowcard good.

nordicfan - good point. Unfortunately for Wayne the BASI insurance requires you to start and end your trip in the UK.

Pretty sure when I did it Dogtag covered - off piste within boundary without a guide, and off piste outside boundary with a guide (no ropes).

?
There is no resort boundary in European resorts - so insurers cannot make any rules about this. There is just on and off piste.

My ski insurance through the Ski Club of GB includes, as standard, off-piste without a guide - and some others do too

Thanks for that - I will have more sleepless nights now Happy

I have spoken to Dog Tag and they are going to call me back later

I did the ISIA tech earlier this year in Zermat and I did see the off piste course going up and down some crazy slopes so hope I'll manage it, if not.... see you in April

snowball,

You are right - i think the classification is off piste and glacier - so the Dogtag insurance will allow you to ski off piste not on glaciers without a guide, but on glaciers you must have a guide.

If you are doing the off piste course in Zermatt you will most likely ski on glaciers with the guide.

Yes, glaciers are (rightly) different, though sometimes (as at Argentierre for example) you don't always know quite where you are or are not on a glacier unless you have a map. But I almost always buy a 1:25,000 map in places I may ski off piste without a guide. Though Italian maps are terrible - very crude and contour lines every 20m instead of 10m.

I have just taken out Dog Tag Annual Multi-Trip, Individual / the middle option of the 3

£120 for the year up to 60 days. Which is what I need ...2 weeks on the basi things (well I "hope" only 2 weeks) and 6 weeks in Italy working

This does cover you for off piste and glacier skiing/walking etc, so I think it's OK. Also they will send a receipt and I can claim back the % that I am working in Italy from the ski school so it’s not too bad.

Wayne - if you've done your tech then you'll be fine with the skiing.

My "adventures" on the course are here.

My top tips:
- make sure you're fit - you'll see that I had real problems with the altitude
- buy an altimeter - it really helps with navigation - especially if you get a white-out
- know your transceiver inside out - you'll see why from the thread
- unless you were a scout then practise your map and compass stuff; practise it; and then practise it again
- buy the maps in advance - Swiss topo have a web site.

Zermatt is a lot of a sod for navigation because distant peaks can you're so high up that it becomes difficult to work out which distant peak is which. That everything is covered in snow (so you can't see some physical features) doesn't help.

Having said that, the pass rate is 90% as opposed to 50% for the tech.

Thanks for mentioning snowball.

I know what you mean. On my tech 4 passed out of 8 - - - 1 just wasn't good enough (which is a shame as he is my mate and we have skied together for a few years now, we trained in Val for a few weeks before the tech and I think he knew he would have problems. The other failed (I think) as they couldn't do fall line in the bumps

The Off Piste looks really good fun though, so pass or fail I'm looking forward to it as an adventure.

I should be OK for the mapreading but for the other items I will read though your details to see if I can get any insight. There are a few of us going over early so we can have a few days in resort training before the start, to get rid of the cop webs

PhillipStanton, there seems to be a difference if www is used in the URL. Links which omit it work for me, but links which include the www take me to the forum home page.
