Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Will Tignes be affected by the World Championships at Val?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Probably going to Tignes first weekend in Feb. I know that there is world championships going on in Val d'Isere over that weekend and runs in Val will be closed. Does anyone know whether the pistes in Tignes and other linked resorts will be affected?

There will obviously be alot more traffic than normal and with Feb being the French holidays and English half term it's going to be a busy time in Tignes and Val d'Isere. There will be runs/slopes affected for the World Cup but in terms of the Espace Killy this will make little difference.

That said certain companies might increase their prices around the World Cup period but otherwise I guess it will be pretty much bussiness as usual.

For more information check out www.tignes.net.

Cheers.

Looks like we'll be there just in time for the slalom.

Is it worth losing a half day of skiing to go watch?

Yes, although you probably don't need to watch the entire race. I've seen the Men's Downhill and the slalom part of the combined race at Val d'Isere a few times. Well worth making the effort to see what a good skier can do. I think tickets for the World Championships are intended to be free, so maybe worth trying to book some in advance of your holiday?

Mosha Marc, Catch the top 20-30 of the first run at 10am, then watch the second while you eat a picnic lunch.

You don't get the feel for the speed of a WC slalom when you see it on TV.

Mosha Marc,

Would I pay to see it..not sure? I've been at the Olympic downhill and the training runs/jumps were good but after a hour or so, you should be done.

I wouldn't head that way to go and see it anymore, but if you are there you should see these guys ski.. The downside will be how much they shut down to accomodate all this and it isn't just on the day of the events either
I was in Val in 92' and they only shut the Face down which was bad enough.... for the week...!!!!!! I can imagine lots of stuff being affected...lifts and pistes...

IME, the punter gets a bad deal .......

Val D'Isere has two mountains running back to the village. The womens races are on Solaise, and the Mens on Belvarde. I would have thouht the disruption would be quite noticable on that side of the domain.

The two designated pistes to be used are both in Val, so no disruption to Tignes in that respect.
When they used the Face for the mens' world cup this February it was shut for about a week (though it is a steep black, so many people were not affected). The run down from Solaise to Val is being used for the womens' events (now called the Rhone Alpes piste?), but the skiing on the Solaise area itself is not due to be shut.

IME world cup races have little effect on the rest of the resort. World Champs are larger, but the resort is large enough to cope with little disturbance.

halfhand,

The World Championships will only close 2 areas for the racing, both are in the central area of Val D'Isere. There's plenty of skiing even though they will close the Solaise and Face de Bellevarde in Val D'Isere to the public.

The skiing in Tignes will not be affected. The links to Val D will still be open.

If you find the Val D'Isere website there is a piste map :-
