Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Have been pricing up trips for March 7th/8th next year, but due to friends pulling out there is a bit more flexibility in our plans than perhaps otherwise.

What do snowHeads think are the benefits and pitfalls involved in going skiing for a week in late Jan rather than early March? I am thinking mainly in terms of the weather, the quality of snow and the crowds, but all advice would be happily imbibed!

We're taking our 18 month old Tommy with us, but apart from that we're Entirely Average People.

Last week of January will probably be quieter and maybe cheaper than the 2nd week of March. Snow could be either excellent or poor in both weeks, depending on what the snow gods decide to dole out but on average I think March has slightly greater snow depths than late January. I'd be happy to ski in either of the weeks you had in mind.

Late January is better for avoiding crowds and getting last minute deals. Snow quality and weather - anyone's guess. Always aim high to reduce the risk of poor snow conditions.

Hmm. Both are good times. What about the first week of February? The last few years snow has generally been (much) better in March. From Tommy's point of view the lighter, warmer, days of March might be nice.

FastEddie, with an 18mth old you'll be safe to assume that he'll spend a fair amount of time indoors. I know that the creche in La Rosiere for example takes babies from 18mths old. They look after them very well, feed them and keep them until the parents collect them after skiing. You'll find the details for Les Galopins on www.larosiere.com
