Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Alps - Recommend a resort & accommodation near Geneva

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Morning all.

Looking for some resort & accommodation advice for next year.

8 of us are flying out to Geneva in mid feb next year for a long weekend's skiing.

We're intermediate skiers, and would like a resort with a bit of nightlife. As we're only going to have 4 days skiing, we'd like somewhere relatively close to Geneva.

The issue we're having is finding an apartment/chalet that does a let for a few nights as it's in high season. We've found one in Megève, but none of us have skied here before.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Ben

ben_leeds, welcome to Snow Heads snowHead - mid-Feb (w/c 14/2) is the half term date for the UK, part of France, Belgium, Holland etc - you will struggle to find accommodation if your dates straddle two weeks, especially when one is such a peak. If you have already booked your flights, and have found somewhere willing to let accommodation at a price that's acceptable, go with it, as you're unlikely to have a massive choice. I haven't skied Megeve, but sure others will be along soon. I understand it's pretty expensive though, as it is quite 'posh'. Good Luck

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Crans-Montana has large slope area suitable for all, but there is not many challenging slopes. I suggest you Verbier, 2 hours drive from Geneva. But you can also take the train, it's by far the least stressful way to get to the resort. The station is right next-door to the airport. The journey takes a couple of hours and costs around £22 each way.. It has extensive, challenging slopes with a lot of off-slope potential and some good bump runs and lively, varied nightlife. I am only afraid that it will be hard to get in February only 4 night stay. Probably it would be better if you look to Nendaz. It is in the same area.

If it's at half term then I think you've got 2 kinds of hope...we had some issues trying to find a 4/5 day apartment rental for the 1st week in Jan last year (still we only started looking on xmas eve eve)
I wouldn't be that worried about resort myself - I'd be focused on finding the accommodation and then accepting whatver resort you get nearby.

If I was you I'd be looking at less obvious reorts than say verbier/cham/mozine/avoriaz as the whole world we be in those places or . Be prepared to stay down the valley and drive in as that might give you more chance of getting accomodation.

Have a look at sallanches IIRC a fellow s/h got some accomodation here last year and it worked well for day trips to cham or PDS. Other places nearby might include cluses. Get your google earth out and it's pretty easy to spot valley towns that are big enough to have hotels and are close to your preferred destination.

Good Luck

Tell a lie, it's actually the 26th of Feb we fly out. Still having issues finding accomodation though.

Any comments on Megève?

ben_leeds, I would edit the title to include Megeve to attract comments on it - you can edit the thread title by clicking the scissors icon next to your first post.

Personally, if you have found accommodation for 8 in that peak time, I'd grab it with both hands and worry about the rest later.

ben_leeds, sorry - I got a bit confused - in your first post you said that you had some accommodation, but your second post suggests otherwise Confused

Accommodation for 8 for a weekend in a peak period will be a nightmare to find.

I've not used them, but these may offer what you need http://www.flexiblebreaks.com/

How cramped are you prepared to be? wink
Megeve is an extensive resort. Not ideal for the powder hound but most anyone else will find good places to skia and eat. Prices are higher than St Gervais but no more than the rest of the Alps.
