Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

hobbiteater, depends completely on the snow situation! You can get to St.Anton in about 2h15 ( but only if you leave Munich really early and get over the Fernpass before the Dutch get there), Hintertux is about 2h30. Garmisch is about 1 hour, the powder skiing on the glacier there can be fun but needs about 2 meters of base or you'll destroy your skis. Kitzbühel can be reached in about 2 hours ( 1h30 if there is no traffic ), snow situation is usually a bit iffy at that time of year though, and some of the lifts only open on Dec 20th. Kaprun is about three hours drive and the glacier always has snow.. The list goes on Toofy Grin

Steilhang, Thanks. Will the Dutch really be so numerous in mid December? They were when i went to Samanun in March but..

Also is there an Austrian Hostel association or similiar?

No the Dutch won't be so numerous, but it's still a good idea to get out of Munich early, or in the evening as the case may be. The Fernpass can really be painful if you get stuck behind bus or lorry traffic.
If you're going to St.Anton then I would just drive over there and see what accomodation is available at the tourist office. Hoteliers are very reluctant to give away a room for the weekend until the very last minute, preferring to rent it out for a whole week at a time. I don't think you'll have any problems finding a room at that time of year Very Happy

Steilhang, second what you say about getting out of Munich, especially on a Saturday. My sister-in-law lives there and we normally travel to Munich and drive to the Alps from there. EVERY time we leave at stupid o'clock just to avoid the traffic jams on the autobahn. We normally arrive in the target resort for about the first lift. It sounds crazy but we've travelled with folk who've left Munich at about 6.30 am and have turn around once on the motorway because of the traffic.

I found this re Austrian youth hostels: http://www.oejhv.or.at/e-choose.htm There's a good hostel in Bad Gastein.

Hope this helps and fingers crossed for good conditions hobbiteater.

Cheers
Kersh
