Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avoriaz / PDS help

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi folks,

I'm off to Avoriaz mid Jan and am looking for some help/suggestions for those familiar with the PDS area.

Up until last year, I would describe myself as a nervous intermediate skiier, happiest on lovely cruizy blues. I had a real breakthrough in both confidence and willingness to challenge myself last year and ended my week in the 3V feeling like a much more competent skiier, enjoying the challenge of some trickier reds - positively seeking out stuff that I would have avoided before.

So, I want to continue in that vein - improving my confidence and competence - I want to tackle some stuff in the PDS to challenge me but without going so crazy that I destroy my confidence by doing something that is beyond me (..the Swiss Wall... Very Happy ).

Can anyone suggest some nice challenging reds / easier blacks that I should head for? I have the psychological barrier of having never skiied a black, so I'm keen to get that out of my system. I'd rather avoid bumps for now, but happy with steep.

Any thoughts? Thanks Very Happy

SLB79, Coupe du Monde above Avoriaz is usually a very nice pisted black. Do not drop into the Combe du Machon unless you want a lot of bumps.
Some nice testing Reds over Chatel Linga direction.
Have fun, and welcome to snowHead 's.

DallyPaul, made the CduM mistake last year, I bounced down that on my board - knees shot to pieces!

The red runs the avoriaz side of the swiss wall (away from it)! Chaux Fleurie lift from lindaret and over the top towards chatel also a good bet.

Have fun and keep the positive!

Hi there
As DallyPaul says, there are a bunch of lovely reds on the way out to Chatel - the best is Linga, the run down to Chatel, which makes a good lunch stop if you've headed out from Avoriaz.
Blacks - Coupe du Monde is lovely if a bit skinny at the top and halfway down (I'm not so keen on skinny, steep and wide is ok!) but otherwise beautiful. There are some easy blacks in the bowl at the back of Les Gets but I don't know if this will be too far for you from Avoriaz.
I'm on this website as I'm a researcher looking for skiers to interview who will be in Avoriaz 21st-24th January to help us develop apps for skiers/snowboarders. Ar you out there then and interested? It's a great project, basically trying to understand why people ski, how they choose where to go, what information they need, etc. You need to be out there with 2+ friends or family and be a smartphone user, and you get £100 cash for your time (interview in the UK before you go and briefly out there on the slopes. It'd be great if you fit the bill and are interested! I'll come and ski the Coupe du Monde with you!

My favourite run is Arbis in the Chamoissiere area. You go up the gunbarrel straight Creux lift and the red snakes it's way back down. If it's not too bumpy/icy the Creux black you just gone up on top of is steep but not too hard.

You should go up to the top of the Swiss Wall and have a look at what you'll be doing in 2013 Laughing . There's a bit of a bar at the top for a beer or vin chaud and then a nice red and a blue down to Les Linderets (I think).

Hi all,
Thanks for all the tips, its much appreciated – it sounds like the Coupe de Monde is the one to head for first!

I’ll print off all the suggestions and do my best to get round them all – we’ve got the full area lift passes so I’d like to ski as much as we can, whilst obviously still leaving time to enjoy the scenery and the mountain restaurants Very Happy

I’ll most certainly have a look at the Swiss Wall and watch the experts but I won't be going down it this time round!

So, does anyone have a recommendation for the best Fondue in the area?! I'm almost as excited about the cheese as I am about skiing... Very Happy

Get this WOman a tartiflette actually wink .
Oh, the joys - I had my first tartiflette only last year - that was a happy day Very Happy . We also had cheese fondue on 4 out of 7 nights - I think I have a problem...

Thanks for the welcome, its good to have an outlet for ones skiing obsession, when ones non-skiing work colleagues have been driven mad with talk of no snow, then some snow, then LOTS of snow...

Come over to Champoussin on the "Swiss Side" (aka the dark side) and try the goats milk cheese sold from the farm next to the chair lift

Personally I dont eat cheese. But my personal experience suggests the stinkier it is, the more people like it Very Happy and this is pretty stinky. As for fondue, I have actually been known to ask to be moved to a different restaurant table to get away from the smell.

To each his own eh. Have a great time in the PdS Smile
