I've been dithering about buying some kjus gear for the past 12 months. My current ski gear is looking a tad old fashioned.
Anyone buy kjus last year and been impressed? Frosty - did I remember you buying some?

I liked the look of it, but it was the price tag that put me off. £600 for a ski jacket???
It did look well made though.

erica2004,
So far over-priced, its faunny, IMV...... my SNR catalogue has a jacket for £720.... FFS..!!!
I can't see it being better ..if as good ...than some of the climbing specialists kit out there. IMO, it doesn't even look as good..
For top kit..last for years...which will not be subserviant to fashion or colours or go faster stripes or whatever, pay £3-400 for a jacket and £300 for the pants..max.
And if you choose right, you'll get bored of it before you wear it out.

even JT's figures are pretty lavish IMO but hey, if you have the cash and want to spend that much, go for it. i would expect things which a ski jacket cannot provide for £720

VolklAttivaS5, gortex isn't the be all and end all of breathable waterproof layers/treatments. in fact, i think that they have a veto over the design of anything using one of their fabrics so one might argue that they hold back innovation etc. Patagonia, for example, uses a proprietary layer which i find to be truly excellent

Arno, yeah, I got a really cheap Lowe Alpine jacket made from eVent which never got put into full producton as they got a Gore contract and thus could no longer make stuff from other fabrics. It's been heavily abused for over 4 years now and has plenty of life left in it.
Personally I'd go for Arc'teryx, lovely kit and worth the extra bit of cash.

Arno, yes I know it's not the only one but what I'm saying is that having GORE Tex in a jacket normally makes it one of the more expensive ones. I have tried a couple of similar ones in the past and I do find my Gore Tex shell to be excellent too.
What I'm saying is, is for a £600-£700 jacket you'd expect it to have all the bells and whistles that you find in other brands at cheaper prices and then some, but they don't seem to have anything more than the popular mainstream mountaineering brands for the extra dosh involved.

I'm with Arno. Not like that though. Although he probably wishes I was.

Thanks -
I did think the £720 jacket is very overpriced but there are some cheaper ones. I'm not a fan of 'goretex' - I've never found it reliable (i.e. waterproof or comfortable) for me so I would actively go out of my way to avoid anything with a goretex membrane. Looking at the S & R catalogue again, I think I would find the kjus a bit too 'styled' - not quite so comfortable as a more 'roomy' jacket, although I think their fabrics are stretchy.

Yes, probably. Best to stick with a tried and tested make I think. There are lots of threads on here discussing the merits of different jackets and how reliable etc, you could have a look to see what others have found to be good.

erica2004, if your current gear is a few years old, i wouldn't write off goretex - it has certainly got much more comfortable and soft. there's a massive range of things though - it's all a bit bewildering!

Arno, did it (Gore Tex) used to be uncomfortable to wear then a long while ago? I've only tried it in my latest shell jacket I've recently bought and I've found it to be spot on, a very comfortable jacket and surprisingly warm for a just a shell jacket too compared to insulated versions I have had in the past, although I've had a mid layer/light jacket before now with Gore Tex Windstopper fabric and that was alright too.

VolklAttivaS5, i've never found it uncomfortable but my first ever goretex shell (a Mountain Equipment Changabang from about 10 years ago) was very heavy and "stiff" compared with comparable jackets today. the fact that hardshells can now be made stretchy helps too
i have a Patagonia Stretch Element which isn't goretex but is incredibly soft, light and stretchy for a full-on technical hard shell. and i got it for £150 (reduced from c£300)

I have been looking in the catalogues and in the stores recently and can't see how the costs are justified for some of the gear - at the end of the day its a couple of yards of technical fabric and some seam taping, made into a jacket. I can't beleive the fabrics cost that much even if you add in development time.

VolklAttivaS5, i generally think that removable hoods add weight (q important to me because i use the jacket for touring) and aren't as water/windproof as non-removable ones
|
|
|
|
|
|
Arno, so you think a non removable hood is better than a removable one for both weight and waterproofness/windproofness? I do prefer the fact it is always attached.

Some people don't like switching to Goretex, or similar breathable / waterproof membranes. Mrs P switched a few years back and to start didn't like the fact that it's not as breathable as non laminated cheap-y insulated jackets. I beat her in to loving it in the end.
Arno, I make you special price you want long weekend 11th -15th March. Bring 12 people. I give you wild powder skiing.

spyderjon, Swirly, I always used to buy TNF women's stuff until I wanted some shell pants with a back that came quite high up the back but nothing at the front and I couldn't find any I liked in the women's ranges. I found some TNF Free Thinker Pants in the sales which were mens in a small and they fitted a treat, not too long in the leg either. Anyway I was that impressed with them compared to the insulated version I had before-amazingly warm considering just a shell with no insulation-I decided to buy the Freethinker jacket as well. Again a blokes jacket but in green. I like it anyway and it's sooooo comfortable.
So what I'm saying is you can wear the girl's gear if you see something nice you like.

Bones, I thought it was like Queuss - if you can pronounce how I've written it! I'm sure when they talk about Lasse Kjus they pronounce it like that

cathy, just had a quick squiz through the other thread. Glad you got rid of the lime green Killy with leather shoulders, like you said it's only a bargain if you actually wear it. Ebay is great for getting rid of stuff you don't want isn't it! A good place to have a look for a fartbag for the EoSB as well apparently.

erica2004, I do have a Kjus jacket and it was a bit expensive but it has performed really well in all conditions after about 80 days skiing use so far it still looks pretty new and has proved totally dry and breathable. I think you can probably buy stuff that is as good for less cost like Tenson and Degree 7 which, partic for ladies, has some nice ranges. You should look at Scott too.
I have seen genuine Kjus stuff on the interenet thats been reduced etc (last seasons styles but still nice) at about half price - this might be a way to go
Last time I recommended something to you (Hotel in Morzine?) it was a bit of a disaster if I remember - hope this goes better
