What's you fave beer in Alps? Mine are as follows in order;
1) Kaiser
2) Zillertal
3) Zwickl (now part of Steigl brewery I think)
Note that they're all Austrian, which leads me to think why can't the French do a good beer, as they're pretty good at most things food and drink orientated?
Best pint has got to be Kaiser from the Griabli, just opposite the Mooserwirt in St Anton, especially when the CCJs used to play there. Does anyone know if they'll be back next year. Bumped into one of them (Chris) this year in St Anton and said that they were getting back together after a break for Chris to get his life sorted out!

Confirms my theory that the French don't do beer.

Adambräu. A small brewery in Innsbruck. The only place I've seen it is in one tiny on mountain hut in Lermoos.
The village brewery in Mittenwald, DE also turns out great beer. I believe it's only available at a few places in town (including the base station on the Karwendalbahn cable car).
Blonde de mt Blanc is also a pretty good beer.
Other than that, all I've seen are the usual large brewery offerings.
Someone in Australia is trying to make a business out of this:

Maybe you haven't lived enough. Try Mandrin, brewed in the heart of the French Alps.

Best beer in the Alps is that offered by the supermarkets.
Budweiser Budvar is, for me, the king of the pilseners. Plenty of decent wheat beers in the German speaking areas and stronger Belgian nightcap beers in the French areas.

ami - DAB (Dortmund Acksteiner Brauerei???) is a great German beer, which you could get from Morrisons supermarkets in UK, bad sadly no longer. You used to also be able to get Zipfer, another fine Austrian beer, from Asda and Sainsbury's but sadly they no longer stock it.
IMO Austrian and German beers are the best and can't understand why you can't get very many of them in the UK - Becks (worst beer to come out of Germany??) and Lowenbrau are about the only two I can think of instantly.
Agree with you Bode, that Gosser is pretty nice too. It's a pity that Forenbrau (????) seems to be taking over St Anton and surrounding area, as it's not as good as any of the beers discussed so far

For me, it has to be Zillertal Schwarze for its flavour and depth of character, or Paulaner Hefe Weissbier Dunkel - basically anything dark and malty hits the spot for me.
On the other hand, for instant refreshment, any of the weissbiers in Austria will do the trick, especially if you stay away from the eurofizz, although even Stiegl has more character than 1664...

Normally just get a selection from the supermarket of ones I've never tried..apart from all the radler and other wierd beer soft drink combos the germanic lot seem to enjoy.
Best I've found though was some local brew bottle conditioned stuff in the Dolomites no idea what its called but we emptied the shop of it and drank that instead of the hotel bar selection

I'll go with the Franziskanner, but I find the Erdinger dunkel smells too flowery for me, with an aftertaste which I can only describe as being like I would imagine a mixture of yeast and perfume would taste.

Austrian beers including Schladminger, Schneewiesse, Steigl, Erdinger
From Canada Sleemans - I think the Amber was the one i liked best, Kokanee - but mainly for the Kokanee Girls
From France - I dislike Faxe (Danish?), maybe it doesn't work at altitude.

boabski, DAB, I believe, is the second largest brewer in Germany. German beers don't tend to get exported on the same scale as some other well known global brands because the breweries are generally much smaller. Consolidation is taking place, but there is no German beer giant like Carlsberg or Heineken. It's pretty much the same situation as in England. You have loads of small, fantastic ales that never make their way off the island.
Kramer, Schneider is pretty hard to beat as far as weizenbier goes. If you can find Maisel, give that a try, but it's not nearly as widely available.
johnboy, Sorry, but I've got to say that Kokanee is swill. There is so much great beer in that part of the world, but that ain't it.
I generally like to try to local breweries, and for that you really can't beat the microbreweries in the Pacific Northwest. In so much of the Alps you just get that nation's largest breweries and maybe Carlsberg. I'd rather drink the stuff that is made in small scale a couple miles down the road.

Some of the Swiss beers are pretty good, can't remember their names (One from Interlaken) and they come in 66cl bottles.
Zillertal gets my vote too.

Off topic - but plenty of great Micro-breweries in Canada and the US. No need to drink Bud or any other chav-juice any more

Sorry to repeat but Gosser is the daddy... I know, I've had to drink thousands of litres of all of them to reach this conclusion... now stop arguing or I'll have to offer you all out (beer talking)

I always find most Austrian beers great. I just wish a lot of the French places would sell more than Amstel - it's just so vile.

1) Belgium for beer but wasn't in the alps from the little I remember leaving the bar.
2) Czechoslovakia for beer - not sure about the alps but had mountains I think.
So I think better go to supermarket as iys too dear in the bars.
But I'll drink anything on a skiing holdiay especially if someone else is buying - even drink the chalet wine so who cares after a few ?

boabski, I have the CCJ's on my ipod, I borrowed a DVD from a mate with a few thousand tracks on it and found it saved on it. Its great and I honestly get flashbacks to the Griabli.
I heard a few rumours about them, did'nt one of them go to rehab in Oz and another get an amputation ? Could be aload of tosh, don't care they are/where the best I've ever seen, anyway
