Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The world’s highest gondola, which reaches 4,843m above sea level, has just opened to the public in Sichuan province, China. Accessing the Aba Great Glacier, the gondola can carry 800 passengers an hour and takes 9.4 minutes to ascend 1,226m. The lift has been built by Doppelmayr, who began work back in October 2006. The top station is 327m higher than the previous record holder -at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Yunnan province. ...Source: http://www.hkssa.net/showthread.php?p=4586

killian, as far as I know, this glacier is not a ski resort. The lift is planned to operate 300 days a year taking up visitors to a lake.
Because it is quite high, all the cabins are equipped with oxygene masks.

Ski-Mag.com, Welcome to Snowheads!
No, it is not. The one in Bolivia is a draglift, not a gondola.

As Renry, indicates, highest gondola servicing a ski area is in India, http://www.hkssa.net/showthread.php?p=4586
Does the Bolivia lift really service a ski area? For residents or superathletes only! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chacaltaya

Regarding the altitude factor, I think this says a lot about the general cardiovascular fitness of the locals and the target market. Unless suffereing from HACE/HAPE, a person's VO2max (roughly equating to Oxygen processing ability to body weight ratio) will dictate their response or capability for exercise at altitude. The Chinese may be chain-smokers but they're leaner and more active on the whole than North Westerners so will likely be better able to cope.

If you want to get ready for exercise at altitude, absolute VO2 max usually responds quite rapidly to training because the insides of our body (e.g. heart size, arterial and capillary extent, haemoglobin concentration and blood volume) will all grow. Non exercisers will always be at their own base level of these factors influencing their oxygen processing capability but that can usually be increased over 12 weeks or so by anything up to 40% just by doing 3 or 4 weekly sessions of constant moderate to intense large muscle group exercise of 40 minutes or so. Losing 5% or so of excess body fat will likely occur simultaneously and contributes towards that aforementioned ratio.

Of course, if you happen to be prone to HACE/HAPE, you could have the deep plumbing and biomechanics of Lance Armstrong and still need emergency evacuation off the mountain to a low altitude hospital. Laughing
