Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Improve Dry Slope Skiing!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi everyone,

Looking for a bit of advice on how to improve dry slope skiing. In the last couple of weeks I have ventured out twice on to dry slopes near me to get a bit of a ski-fix and some practice in before the next ski season. I enjoy it, it's a good work out for the legs and good practice - the only annoying part I have found is how slow it is regardless of the size/steepness of the slope.

Does anyone know if there is there any wax or oil that I can purchase that will make the experience faster and more rewarding? Alternatively, any other suggestions on how to improve the experience would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Esteban.

I don't really find that the wax helps that much.. the dry slope just needs to be well watered imo. I was on the dry slope for slalom practise last winter and it started snowing/sleeting, and after 30 minutes or so it was nice and zippy quick. Although I guess the wax would help on a dry summers day.

Haggis_Trap, or go to ones that actually use the sprinklers, freezing cold wet mornings are always good Toofy Grin

Zardoz notwax (available from spyderjon) or spraying with silicone-based polish (from Mr Sheen) at the side of the slope has some effect.

For general preparation there are specialised dry slope waxes, which are mostly to protect to base rather than give better slip, but I do find polishing up with a liquid wax also helps. The data wax kit is a good place to start e.g. http://www.edgeandwax.co.uk/product_dryslope.htm

But, Timmaah, is right the best lubricant is rain (or a sprinkler system if the slope has one).

I met the chap who makes this, Ed, nice chap.

The wax works well on carpet.

This business (along with ski instructing) keeps him skiing all season. He does it all from a shed in his back garden.

He also sold me his Rossi 9S Oversize a while back which has nothing to do with this thread so I shall stop rambling.

Unless, as often happens at Hillend, the sprinkler system is frozen as well. Rain is the answer imo

Esteban, Go to a slope with a working misting system, or wait till it rains. Use shorter skis with sharp edges. Zardoz and Mr Sheen are good for speed, but sharp edges help the turns more....

Mmm, the smell of cans upon cans of Back to Black being emptied in the start area. The start marshal must've been high as a kite by the end of the race.

I once spotted a guy at a dryslope grand prix comp who had imaginatively drilled a hole in each ski just in front of the toe piece of each binding. Upon which he had mounted the old fashioned telephone wire junction boxes. He would then fill these boxes with some form of (probably home brewed) liquid wax and go for his run!

vielhaber eh! good old scottish planks, so that must have been late 70's/early 80's?

I should have checked out the guys times. I think he was a pretty good standard of racer and he obviously felt that his system did the job.

The comments about back to black take me back too, even if it didn't make you ski faster it certainly felt like you were after all the fumes you accidentally ingested at the top of the slope!
