Poster: A snowHead

Always wondered this - How much does it have to snow for there to be a 10cm increase showing on the piste levels - ie whats the result once the piste bashers have done their bit?
I'm sure one of you knows!

Ok, according to this page Snow, ice and glacier info snow (powder) density is approx 0.05 g cm-3. Corn snow is between 0.4 and 0.8 g cm-3, so assuming it hasn't been bashed to death, let's assume it is 0.5 - ten times as dense as powder. Therefore, for 10cm of pisted snow, you'll need 1m of snowfall (assuming no melting etc.)

Thanks masopa that makes it much easy to work out how much snow may or may not be around when we go on the 6th!

Hey, don't worry! I used to be twice a day looking at the forecasts thinking, oh no, hasn't snowed for a week, getting a bit icy etc etc. And then the last hols taught me how unpredictable the weather can be, conditions can totally change one day to the next. Our snow conditions were looking fine, snowed 2 days before we went, thought great & then it literally didn't stop snowing all week. No matter what the conditions are, if you're going on 6 March you'll be able to ski And if the conditions are not quite perfect - well, its all good experience.
Oh, feel as if I've given a bit of a lecture there - sorry Just got back from lovely Indian lunch with work team, so can't be told of for being drunk...hic... or late back from lunch. Don't think will be very productive on the non-snowHeads front though

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Note, however, that at least in the US, the reported snow depth isn't the "bashed" depth, but the "settled" depth at a protected area on the mountain.

An old Danish mate told me that if I ever see anyone measuring the snow on a piste-side roof, it's the bloke doing the snow report.
