 Unluckiest season-opener of the year must be Stevens Pass in Washington State which planned to start its lifts last weekend following a magnificent 1m snowfall, only to see it dissolve in 13cm of rain!
The ski area, two hours by road from Seattle, is hoping for a recovery this weekend, but may have to wait a bit longer yet...

It is not unusual for rain in that part of the world. Steven's Pass starts out near 4,000 feet high and depending upon the storms, it can dump snow or rain. I have skied there many times in the rain.
Years ago in 1980 I believe, they had a similar situation. Great snow early in december and then rain. They closed for 6 weeks until the end of January. This saved the snowpack which was saturated. Other areas keep skiing and skied off the snow. Steven's Pass had a banner spring as all the other resorts had green grass.

When filing that story I didn't think there was the remotest chance of discovering a Stevens Pass skier in our midst, so thanks for your insights.
I don't know whether you skied at Stevens Pass with an umbrella hat or a helmet, or neither, but rain protection is clearly an issue there (as it will sadly be at an increasing number of ski areas in the coming decades, on current predictions).

David I believe it's a unique feature of snowHeads that no matter how obscure the topic someone will have valid comments to contribute. Or when all else fails, zany humour. I know you have had a few forum equivalents of a googlewhack, where no-one picked up on your news items, leaving a lonely solitary post. But not many.

And it's not getting any better for poor Stevens Pass or the other resorts nearby. See this article from MSNBC But you shouldn't believe all you read in the online papers. The Stevens Pass web site (link in DG's post) says the alpine areas will open tomorrow.
