Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Argentina skiing - August

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts/wisdom on skiing in Argentina they could share with me at all?

I am going to Argentina in August and was thinking of going skiing for 1 week out of a 3.5 week holiday as haven't been in two years (gagging to go). I have read that this can be a busy time to go skiing but don't have a choice and was looking for direction about any of the main resorts.

My husband and I are reasonable skiers and pretty much want to be in a resort where we don't have to get on a bus to ski everyday (is that what happens if you stay in Barlioche to get to Catedral?). We are not too worried about having a big apres ski resort (although something around would be good).

We want to organise everything ourselves as from what I've seen on this forum some companies are costing a fortune. We'd like to be somewhere that is good skiing but doesn't cost the earth to stay e.g. prefer good value.

Any ideas would be great as we are fast running out of time and need to book in advance.

Thanks.

Las Lenas then it is. Some of the best terrain in the world apparently. There are various classes of hotel and appartments.

For Chile consider Valle Nevado - Avoriaz of the Andes.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for your reply. Just had a look at accommodation prices in Las Lenas and seems pretty pricey and booked!!

Any other options worth looking at?

I've been to Bariloche, Chapelco, Pucon, Termas de Chillan, Valle N/El colorado, & Portillo. Only the latter 3 have ski in/out but its more expensive than reasonable accomodation not far away if you're prepared to compromise on the bus bit.

Antillanca, Chile. The poor man's / smart man's Portillo.

Small resort but no-one there. Me & mates skied fresh for 3 days straight off the top of the lifts. No hiking. And the hiking is great.

Ski-in, ski-out.

3 meals, accommodation and lift pass package.

Dramatic scenery (volcanic). Even got some trees (monkey puzzle).

Strongly recommended.

One of my favourites anywhere.

Or Caviahue, Argentina.

Small village on a lake with some nice hotels & great restaurants.

Hill is flatish at the bottom , but got some great stuff if you hike/traverse. Can even hike to the volcano and see it smoking and bubbling.

2-minute drive to the lifts. Hotels will take you.

Thanks very much for your help. Sounds like it depends on what I can get at the mo as lots of places booked up arrrgghhh. Thinking Bariloche (Cerro Catedral) now as seems to be quite a few runs there and not the problem of Las Lenas and lift closing due to high winds. I know you can never predict but as only going for 1 week skiing, need to make sure I have some hope! Fingers crossed.

Is the transfer to the mountain a real pain in Bariloche and does it cost a bit?

Anyone heard of this place? http://www.antiguosolar.com/en/mapa.htm

Thanks

Don't know how much it costs, but the journey to and from Cerro Catedral from Bariloche each day certainly doesn't fit your initial criteria.

This is a good link for all things Bariloche and I believe the guy runs a lodge.

Widger76, have a look on http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/ It's an American site and lots of the posters head down for holidays / seasons, quite often on a shoe string.

I would learn to use the search feature on the site, turn on your 'crap' filter and really don't think about posting a question until you have read so much of it that your eyes bleed.

Good luck.
