Are there any women skiers out there interested in womens' only weeks? If so, what stage are you at with your ski-ing? Would you want to do the "whole thing" with all women in a chalet or hotel, ski-ing & socialising? Would you prefer to just have women only lessons while on holiday with your families? What time of year do you like to ski? Would womens' weeks be better in the spring (tan as well)?
I'm very interested to hear your views, and whether this would interest women skiers, of whatever level. If there's enough interest then I could organise something. I generally find that the men of the family tend to try to push the women down runs they find too steep, or to ski faster than they want to. Does this happenin your family? YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
In point of fact there are (although it pains me to admit it) differences in the way men and women approach a passtime such as ski-ing, and I've found in my own ski-ing life that generally there's no allowance made for this. I don't mean that women should not be expected to ski as well as men, but that our approach often differs, and therefore so does the result and the enjoyment factor.
Let me know what you think. I really do want to know.

easiski, yes definitely. I have booked a 2 day Women on the Edge course for when we are in Whistler at Easter. Yes this does happen in my family (well, you've met my lot!) I tend to find it very competitiive esp. between Jules and Richard. We went to Castleford yesterday to ski with some of the SnowHeads, you'll be glad to know Julian was leaning forward!!!!

I wouldnt at this stage. I tend to ski with guys because they really do make me push myself and ski pistes I might otherwise not. When its just me and the girls we stop all the time ans stick to reds and blues, when we go as a group its pretty much anything. I think its the whole girs vs boys mentality and i dont want to let the side down!

Yeah - ( I know it may sound corny but) we could form a group of Snowhead skiers who meet once a year, they of course would be of all levels.
Me and my other half are at slightly at different levels and unless we join into a ski school and are put into different classes we just ski to each others level and are never pushed that little bit by each other.

Michelle, some people prefer to spend all their time improving their technique over and over, and others prefer to get on with it and go for it. Id rather be skiing all day than standing in a line and i think thats how I improve. You can have the best technique in the world but if you're too scared to go for it then whats the point?

I'm with Nade on this one. I usually ski with a mixed group, but find that it's usually the guys who are better than me. The holiday that I improved the most on, was with a couple of very good skiers who made me go down slopes I wouldn't have thought about doing otherwise. Usually when I ski with other women, I'm the one forcing them to "try an easy black".
If it was at a level that would challenge me, then I'd be up for it.

As you can see from an earlier posting I'm off on a women only coaching week in January so think they are a good idea. The reason I chose this week was because :
1) I was attracted to the teaching methods(lots of psychological stuff to combat anxiety and fear), 2)you can have a good laugh with a group of women 3) I'm far more likely to say when I'm scared about doing something if I'm with women than when I'm with men - don't like to look 'vulnerable' in front of men 3) my hubby is far more likely to agree to me going if I say i'm going with a group of women 4) in principle it should be easier to get a roomie for the week to avoid the single supplement if your group is all women.
So yes! It's a great idea! I'm also planning another ski week in February (weekend of 19th/20th) I have got two other women who might be interested- What sort of thing were you thinking of Easiski? Do you have your own chalet or something?

Nadenoodlee, I can see where you're coming from, but in reality you don't improve much just ski-ing around (even with much better skiers) unless you're extremely talented. Generally you can gain confidence and experience by ski-ing around, but most people don't improve technically. If you have really good technique that gives you confidence. Not all women are "stuck" on blues and easy reds, but many of us just enjoy ski-ing with other good women skiers because you hardly ever get the chance.
Elizabeth B, Do they ski better or just faster? Speed and steepness are irrelevant if you're good enough. You can ski a piste because you like it, the colour of it ceases mattering eventually. Ditto with speed. If you're a good enough skier you can ski fast or not depending on how you feel that day, but if you ski like Martin Bell then I don't suppose anything FEELS fast.
Helena, What I was thinking of was perhaps to run a week out of high season (low cost for all) with perhaps 2 or 3 groups of differing levels. I normally work with maximum 4 in a group so (Nadenoodlee, ) there's no standing around and queuing. There is standing around to discuss, of course. When the groups are so small the learning time is maximised, and the students can then go off and practice while others are having their lessons. Practising is very important, and I believe that if you pay me to watch you consolidate what you've just learnt you're wasting your money and my time!
I would certainly expect a number of women who are on that blue/red divide, and if there were too many they could be divided into different groups according to other factors (age, experience, fitness, whatever seemed appropriate). As a one woman band I can always be (and always try to be), more flexible than a skischool. I don't have my own chalet, but I have contacts with chalets (catered & self catering), and also with hotels, so I don't think finding accommodation would be a problem.
So far I'm surprised and amazed at the response to this question, so keep voting, keep posting, and I'll give the whole possibility some very serious thought!

easiski, excellent idea and thank you for suggesting it. I would really appreciate such individual tuition - M Coins is the type who throws himself down any slope and stays upright. Since taking lessons in Banff this year he even has a bit of style . But I do have a confidence issue and although this is improving I think I would definitely benefit from your proposal. The only prob is timing - we go twice a year, not sure if I could get the time off work/afford a third trip, but would definitely try to if it was to go ahead. Would just have to wangle it past M Coins then...

erica2004, It's a course run by a company called bobski (if you search on that you should get the website) I've been really impressed by the service so far. I e-mailed an interest and was asked to phone to speak to Bob himself. We had a long chat on the phone about what I wanted from the course and since then he has sent me several letters with lots of information and questionnaires to complete to establish (psychologically) how I learn best /are motivated- and I havn't even had to pay anything yet!
I'm looking for a roomie if you are interested!

I'm not sure about women only groups. There are so many different types of woman. For the first 15 or so years of my skiing, I was the only girl skiing with a bunch of guys, because the other girls in our group were not able/experienced enough to ski what we were skiing.
I've been on 3 or 4 extra long weekends with girlfriends, which have been wicked fun, but disappointing skiing. I've ended helping and not doing enough skiing. I do find that some women can be very nervous, and want to know what's round the next corner before they will turn it, probably because they don't have confidence in their ability to cope with whatever is there.
Maybe being the only female in my family, with 2 teenage sons who have skied since they were 4 years old has made me ski more like a man!

RachelQ, I ski with teenage son who learnt to ski at a similar age, but still don;t ski like a man. What am I doing wrong? In fact these days I rarely ski with another woman at all.

Personally I think it's a great idea. I shall make sure Mrs NBT has a read of this tonight. From my point of view, it would be good if there were other "other halves" out there so we could ski while the women were in classes, and based on past experience I'm not sure Mrs NBT would be up for the whole "women only" holiday.

Helen Beaumont, it's definitely good fun skiing with other women, if they are the same kind of skier as you are. Your 'Women on the Edge' course sounds good. I'm talking about the 'girly' skiers, but then they're 'girly' in life as well as on the piste (or off). And so as not to offend, my definition of 'girly' is having to always have perfect hair and makeup, and the inability to just go for it. But then I have always been known as one of the lads. I'm not at all sure this is a compliment!

I agree that sometimes it can be frustrating if you are skiing with someone who is maybe a bit timid on the slopes ... but its not always girls .. there are guys who ski like that too ! Its really a case of skiing with the same level of skiier.
I have taken some lessons most years over the last 15 years .. and mainly for the craic. The first few years there was a lot of standing around ... but it was also a good laugh. But after the first few years, I find there is very little standing around .. and its great having someone who knows the mountain ... so you get the best snow conditions, best sunshine, least crowds, smallest queues, nicest restaurants ...
So I agree with Rachel that its great if you ski with a group who are a similar ability and similar fitness ... and I also think Easi skis idea of a women only group could be a good laugh.
