La Plagne are expecting a fall, I got an e-mail yesterday saying 8cms this weekend. I assume that is for the valley so may be better higher up.

skanky,
I was talking to a guy who runs a chalet in Belle plagne and he passed this on. His words were 'the weekend '
Maybe that is resort speak for there is some on the way which might pacify people but it isn't going to be much..!!

The good news: after endless days with hardly a cloud passing overhead since November, the sky is now a distinct and continuous shade of grey.
The bad news: nothing is falling out of it.
Yet!

I'd expect some from the well defined, narrow band of cloud that wraps round into Spain:
[EDIT - the satellite images files have changed].
http://www.meteoam.it/satellit/WWW/
Look at Infrarosso 4 and Visible4
The Alps are currently under the grey stuff in front of it.
That's the cold front shown on here through northern France and is bringing the rain band(s) shown here. [Edit] Both fronts (I think) are visible but very weak and narrow in the pictures [Edit].
You'd need Obs to see for sure, but it looks to alfready have gone further than the FAX charts had it by tomorrow before petering out.
Bit of hurried look that, so there may be the odd mistake (wrong chart) or similar.
The current situation is a very difficult one to forecast, which is why the BBC are not showing much detail beyond tomorrow at the moment. Every new run gives a different result.

How cold is it up there? At 400 meters on the edge of the Chartreuse it is 10C (on the car thermometer) and it is drizzling. So it may be snowing a bit above 1500/2000 meters. Although there is a temperature inversion which is causing bad smog here... so it may actually get warmer further up.

The skiclub site shows freezing point at 1450m today and then up to 1600m tomorrow before comming down to 1200m on saturday for Val d'Isere

You know it makes sense.

The snow cannons were going until about 11 this morning at Val, felt cold - but was colder in the valley floor again, has been like that for several days now. Yesterday it was below zero until mid-morning in Bourg St Maurice, but I noticed the cannons had stopped well before 9 up at Arc 1600.

The current charts show a switch to SW winds after the weekend (after the current crop of lows goes through). This will probably mean a rise in temperature, though by how much I don't know. However, looking at the extreme range of the charts, you may get another cold front (and possibly a low pressure system) or two through before Christmas. The big problem is that teh Azores high is looking to ridge eastwards - this is what brings the SW winds, and it could also deflect some low pressure systems to the N & E of the Alps (Austria may do quite well from this set-up). How good or bad it is will really depend on how much that high ridges and how long it remains like that.
[EDIT: I was talking rubbish about the Pyrennes ]

Well it's happening - see this article from the Telegraph - which also includes the odds for a White Christmas at several UK towns.
