Hope everyone enjoyed their skiing/boarding this season.
My Bro and I went to Saalbach from 7th - 12th Jan, it was fantastic! The snow started gettig a bit soft in the last few days. And very soft on the last day. The HOTEL SONNEGG comes HIGHLY RECOMENED. Extreemly good value for money! We also enjoyed a very good day on top of the Kitzstein Horn Glacia in the Kaprun Region only 40mins away by car. Conditions where perfect. Proper powder
Anyway, ill save that for the other forum!

Ive just spotted at news post about New Zeland, and they are trying to get holiday makers to HITCH HIKE to cut carbon emisions..
I had no idea you could go skiing in NZ.
Has anyone here ever been?
Which resorts are best? What is usualy the best time to go? How does it compare to Saalbach?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

With only one exception, the accommodation is in a nearby town rather than slopeside so it would make a lot of sense to hitch hike up and down from the lifts.
The ski hills in NZ are generally smaller than we're used to in Europe so you wouldn't find anything as extensive as Saalbach.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

One of my staff went out to Treble Cone and hasnt come back so guess that speaks volumes - give it a try. Nowhere near as big as the alps but a good base for summer skiing.

Only skied the Remarkables in NZ and it was a small but great resort. Well maintained with lots of variety. It is one of a few resorts within touching distance of Queenstown so you could vary it with other local resorts. We had a fantastic time there and would love to go back for more and to try out some of the other near by resorts. I would definitely recommend giving it a go!

Karl Moto I have skied 2 resorts on Mt Ruapehu a volcano in the middle of the north island , Turoa and Whakapappa. Although both are small they are well worth a weekend visit if you are in Auckland.
I think the season down there starts in June and runs til late October but I'm sure others will be along soon who know more than me about the ski scene in NZ

You know it makes sense.

If you have ever seen Lord of the Rings and the scenery in those three movies -- you guessed it -- all in NZ. Base yourself in Queenstown and head to Cardrona, the Remarkables, and Coronet Peak. Plenty of snow, heaps of fun and a lot cheaper than Australia. No crowds whatsoever.
